Himalayan Dumplings by Kyikyi For Tibetan culture through the lens of food
https://linktr.ee/HimalayanDumplings Welcome to the world of Himalayan Momos & More! Taste the momos.
(1)

Perhaps, the most underrepresented of the Asian dumpling family, momos are unofficially the national food of Tibet and become an obsession (and rightly so) for foodies in the Himalayan countries. Unpretentious at quick glance, momos are steamed dumplings made from mildly curried stuffing and wrapped in handmade dough that surprise you with burst of flavors with each bite. This is the (culinary)

journey of an immigrant, who moved to (oh-so-fabulous) Portlandia but missed her favorite cultural dish so much that she had to begin this journey for the love of momos!

Looking back at this now, I am feeling low key embarrassed😭 for being wayy too excited over sharing my "discovery" with my market neighbors although that's exactly how I was feeling then😂

I love meeting people from social media in real life at our mkt booths and I love that I get to do that with market neighbors, who have become close friends💛

Life is hard either way and I chose this hard because it brings out the best in me having the honor to introduce Tibetan 🥟 and our story to the local community 🥰

Find us under the yellow tent with the smiling Tibetan snow lion💛🥟💛

If you watch the actual lunch service, it looks like a seamless family operation. We served 150 corporate guests in 90 minutes at a company picnic, with half my staff being my teenage daughters.

That is a crazy average of one guest served every 40ish seconds.

Behind-the-scene reality though and it’s organized chaos, siblings bickering, and full-on mom mode 🙋🏻‍♀️

My parenting style sits in a funny middle ground. By general Eastern standards, I am often considered "too lenient." I encourage my daughters to speak their minds, choose progress over perfect A’s, and challenge me (with logic & civility that is)🤭

Yet by general Western standards, I’m a "strict mom" because I am firm on punctuality, accountability, respect, and financial management even from a young age.

When you see me correcting my kids about face-touching with gloves, or giving my daughter a kiss, that is just my two worlds colliding and I am so grateful for the nuances.

At the end of the day, as an immigrant mom and a Tibetan refugee, I am doing the best I can with the contrasting truths of life as I've lived it and know it, while keeping in mind that my daughters lived experience is quite different from mine💛. BUT being a bootstrapped small business owner & a mom is still soooo hard😂

Do you think the kids got the base hourly or did they earn the $20 bonus hourly? 🙃 👀👇🏽

Since my daughter just turned 16, she had her first training as one of our Brand Ambassadors at the farmers markets...and even drove us on the freeway to the market. 🚗

After years of working behind the scenes during her summer breaks, it felt like a special milestone for both of us💛

There was plenty of bickering, hugs, and laughs that day...and yes, I did deduct the $10 from her paycheck.

As my daughters would say, 🙄 "Yes Mama, it's the principle." 😅

The other day, I woke up to a gentle nudge from my daughter as I had fallen asleep while texting mid sentence, which was my cue that it's time to hit pause on something as I have been working over drive without a break for a while😅

So starting next week, we're taking the rest of August off from Cafe hours to catch up on🥟 production and keep up with our farmers markets, catering, August pop ups, our new website launch, and the million other things that come with growing a small business.

Hayooo..Growing pains are... very real and if you know me, you know I did not make this decision lightly ☺️

Hope to see you at the Cafe this week before we close for the month of August or under our yellow tent at one of our market stands or pop ups this month.

Thujeche (thank you) for being here💛. I am in awe and so grateful for the local community love as I continue to build the 1st woman-owned Tibetan food brand in the country, bootstrapped but with intention & care.

With my deepest gratitude,
Tired Kyikyi

This immigrant dream remains bootstrapped & self-funded with little room for mistakes or losses so closing Cafe anytime is never done lightly 💛

So sorry though 💛Cafe will be closed today & tomorrow to squeeze in extra production days and keep up 🥟with our markets.

Thujeche for your grace while I figure out the growing pains of my small company.

And thank you so much for your continued support in building the 1st woman-owned CPG Tibetan food brand in the country, with intention & care.

With love,
Kyikyi

I just realized that this week is my anniversary week of when I immigrated to the U.S. with one large suitcase filled with my Sunday best, a small sum of money, and big dreams.

My "American dream" and definition of success have evolved so much since then. What once centered on financial security and wealth building, as a young new immigrant has evolved into something much deeper: building the first of its kind Tibetan brand rooted in cultural stewardship, ownership, and representation.

While I started my entrepreneurial journey later than many by conventional standards and there are more risks and challenges being a parent with young kids and being older, I wouldn't change a thing.

Every chapter before this one has shaped the person I needed to become to carry this work forward with purpose and conviction.

Life can be hard either way. We all choose our hard, right? Being stubbornly hopeful helps me immensely too. Sometimes I wonder if that stubjorn hope was shaped by growing up as a refugee. 💛

Happy Friday. 🥰

With love,
Kyikyi
