Himalayan Dumplings by Kyikyi For Tibetan culture through the lens of food
https://linktr.ee/HimalayanDumplings Welcome to the world of Himalayan Momos & More! Taste the momos.
(1)

Perhaps, the most underrepresented of the Asian dumpling family, momos are unofficially the national food of Tibet and become an obsession (and rightly so) for foodies in the Himalayan countries. Unpretentious at quick glance, momos are steamed dumplings made from mildly curried stuffing and wrapped in handmade dough that surprise you with burst of flavors with each bite. This is the (culinary)

journey of an immigrant, who moved to (oh-so-fabulous) Portlandia but missed her favorite cultural dish so much that she had to begin this journey for the love of momos!

Every week, I still meet customers trying Tibetan food for the very first time. And every. single. time, it makes my heart so so happy.

Thujeche. Thank you for empowering me to share a small piece of Tibetan culture and our story through food.

Hope to see you sometime this week/weekend.
With love,
Kyikyi ❤️

Still processing this one as the turnout for our Tibetan vegan food at was well beyond my expectations 💛

More than anything thank you to those who waited so patiently and graciously. I tried hard not to show my stress outwardly as I watched our wait times grow longer than usual and the order line remain nonstop.

While I still feel bad about the wait, my team and I deeply appreciated the exceptional kindness and grace shown by the vegan community💛

THUJECHE.

🎀Thank you for embracing our little Tibetan food business and this immigrant dream to build the 1st woman-owned Tibetan 🥟 brand in the US.

We can't wait to cook for you again.

In business, they call it the customer persona or buyer persona: essentially a representation of a brand’s ideal customer. Kind of like in dating…what’s your type 😅

I’ve asked myself this question often throughout my journey of building the first woman-owned Tibetan dumpling brand in the country. And while my answer hasn’t changed much, it has become more specific over time.

What I’m slowly realizing is that the clearer you become in your values and voice, the more you naturally lose “mass appeal,” which from a business perspective, is probably not ideal 😅

I don’t have the skills, bandwidth, or resources to curate some perfectly strategic content plan. I mostly just speak from the heart, in all its imperfections.

🔆But I do feel many of our customers and followers of our little Tibetan brand share two things: curiosity about cultures beyond their own and a genuine desire for shared humanity.

And honestly, that’s pretty special to me ☺️

Eid Mubarak to our Muslim neighbors and customers💫 💛

Turned 49 today 🎂

I was originally just going to post a very nonchalant, cool Gen Z “birthday today” post…but clearly my age definitely showed because I somehow ended up making an entire birthday reflections carousel based on the personal reflections I journal every birthday 🤪

Anyway, I have no pearls of wisdom to share nor any “exciting” birthday plans, but I am incredibly grateful for some of the milestones I’ve had the privilege to experience and learn from as I continue building something from the ground up that feels deeply personal to me.

And for those who actually took the time to read through it al and those that don't read beyond the 1st line of captions but still here on this journey, thank you for being here truly 💛

Love,
Kyikyi

Am I the right “fit” for the food industry?
Funny enough, this question popped into my head while making this week’s special: fresh Strawberry Banana Lassi 😄

I questioned my fit when I began my corporate career in sales because I didn’t have the typical personality traits associated with a “successful” salesperson.

Plot twist: I ended up being very successful in sales (as an introvert), hitting multi-million dollar annual sales quotas…but on my own terms, in a way that kept my inner peace.

That same question lingered in my head when I walked away from the financial security & stability I worked so hard for as a new immigrant.....wondering whether I am smart enough, mentally strong enough or have the resilience to stay true to my values amidst immense pressure to survive in an industry with brutally high failure rate.

And today? I caught myself feeling tempted to add matcha something…anything…simply because of how popular & lucrative matcha currently is 🙈

But instead, I made fresh (not-too-sweet) 🍓🍌 lassi, which obv doesn’t have the same matcha virality & pull 🤪

Only time will tell if my approach of sticking with a small scratch-made menu of 🥟, noodles, handpies & lassi in a trend-driven food & bev reality is smart or dumb 😅

But for now, today’s lassi making became a small moment of self-reflection & a gentle reminder to myself (and maybe somebody reading this) that it’s okay to feel the pull of trends, expectations, or conventional paths…and still choose to build a life that speaks to YOU in small and big ways 💛

Have a lovely day & hope to see you at the cafe today/trow or one of our weekend farmers market stands🥰

Behind-the-scene of this past week including a dissapointed DM💛 Personal life highlight was my 16-year-old getting her driver’s license and no, I didn’t dignify that DM with a reply as my body is too tired from just juggling betweek being a mom and a bootstrapped small business owner 🤪

Agreement is optional. Kindness doesn't have to be, seriously. I hope you have a beautiful rest of the afternoon and hope to see you at Cafe or our farmers mkt stands.

Mother's Day Fun Fact: My Tibetan & immigrant roots may have inspired this small biz journey, but it was the busy working mom in me that shaped the quiet details ⬇️ of how our food can be accessed & experienced 💛

Larger hearty 🥟. Onions minced in a way even the pickiest eaters won’t catch. Fresh ingredients. Scratch-made sauces. Allergen-friendly. Vegan options even meat eaters enjoy. Multiple ways to cook them: steam, pan fry, air fry, or boil. No special equipment needed.

As Mother’s Day approaches, if the gift of food is your love language too, stop by for a 🥟 bag you or your loved one can enjoy at your own pace & convenience 💛

Lately, life has felt like: “Congratulations! You’ve unlocked a new level in the universe’s obstacle course.”

That is me laugh-crying through it 🤪

You know though, the older I get, the more I appreciate certain Tibetan Buddhist philosophies I grew up with. The one I’ve come back to most, especially since taking the leap of faith in pursuing this immigrant dream, is the philosophy around impermanence.

It has helped me not only take life’s challenges more in stride, but also stay grounded during life’s successes.

Anyway, despite my deeper appreciation for impermanence, I would still very much like to ask the universe to graduate me from the current obstacle course 😄

👩🏻‍🍳Hope to see you at the Cafe or one of our weekend farmers markets.

With pop-up and catering season underway, I know our Cafe hours can feel a bit unpredictable; especially since our dine-in time is already limited.

I always update our hours in advance (Google first), and I try to share context whenever I can. I promise it’s not on a whim, though I still feel it when someone calls and I hear the disappointment on the other end 😔

My aspiration remains to build the first woman-owned Tibetan 🥟 brand in the country in a way that is sustainable and stays true to my heart; remain self-funded to protect the voice and story of this immigrant dream, while also learning to listen to my body through this season of perimenopause and the very real health shifts that come with it ☺️

Thujeche (thank you) for loving our Tibetan food and being on this journey with me, truly. Hope to see you today or over the weekend at the mkts💛

We sold out of housemade Lassi so quickly today 💛 I am not much of an iced beverage drinker in general ( I habitually drink hot water all year long- a traditional Tibetan custom🤪) but Lassi has been a fave since childhood & that's why our menu always has Mango 🥭Lassi 🙈

Today I made Strawberry 🍓Lassi and tomorrow, I will make the lesser known of the Lassi; Banana 🍌Lassi, which to me tastes like a not-to-sweet dessert in a refreshing drink that's also high in fiber & probiotic rich☺️
