While it can be difficult to accept, darkness and light both have their roles to play. When you are feeling lost in the dark, remember that the light will return. May you find comfort and hope this winter solstice. And a few moments to stand outside and take in at least a little bit of the natural world, even though it’s cold, and remember that you are a part of it. It can be easy to forget.

I love the way this special order wreath came out 🧡 Picking and drying the grass while it was green made it that much more “lively” (for a dried flower wreath).

Like these little bees I’ve been clinging to every last flower that I can, but the slim pickings of harvestable flowers today marked the last harvest of the year. It was a good season, and I am fully satisfied and ready to let go.

The Tithonia, AKA “Mexican sunflower,” is basically just a gigantic pollinator habitat now that I’ve seen it doesn’t make a good cut flower. The stems are not sturdy, although the leaves and stems are deliciously soft and velvety to the touch, which I find weirdly soothing. Monarchs love it, and I love seeing the big mass of orange polka dots on a green background. Luckily there’s nothing to cut on either side of it because it’s swallowing up the neighboring rows. Thinking back to the teeny tiny soil blocks where it was first seeded… it really is magic that something this humongous starts as a small seed.

Sunday funday! (Photos in reverse order since the big pile of vines isn’t that attractive.) I’ve been thinking about doing this for the past several Sundays, and cleaning had taken precedent, but this week a sacrifice had to be made. I’ve been drying so many flowers this year, I need to start wreath-making soon!

Cosmos is a flower I’ve grown every season, and it always stands out as a personal favorite. There are so many gorgeous varieties, they smell so nice, and they have lovely flowers and foliage. I would take a bouquet of just cosmos (with no other flowers) any day.

Happy Pollinator Week! We love growing vegetables AND flowers because not only is every beautiful flower a work of art - they’re also sources of food for these hard workers 🐝 🦋 (and habitats for many other little creatures 🐞) You can learn more about pollinators and the plants that host them from 🌼

Goings-on in the dahlia patch. I’m happy to report that they survived the frost under the row cover with the exception of a few buds 🙌 I also found this egg case with what I believe to be its creator (looks like a European mantis).
