About Your Hosts: the Lee Peterson Tree Farm 🌲🍎

Thank you for joining us on this amazing adventure! Here’s a peek at the Lee Peterson Tree Farm.

We are a second‑generation, ma‑and‑pa farm, old‑fashioned and traditional. No hay, sleigh, or helicopter rides; no petting zoo, other than the wildlife God provides. Originally a Christmas tree farm, Lee added the orchard—his personal dream—and it has been a joy to serve families from all over Minnesota. From fresh, crisp apples U‑pick to towering Christmas trees you cut and load, it’s been our joy to help make celebrations special. Lee has worked the farm all his life, and after Mom and Dad’s passing, he continued their legacy.

🍎 In early fall, our U-pick apple orchard features incredibly flavorful SweeTango®, Honeycrisp, and other varieties of apples. We say, “God makes them taste delicious, and Lee makes them look pretty.”

🌲 We’re honored to provide majestic evergreen trees for homes, churches, businesses, and those looking for something truly grand to celebrate the season. A wonderful customer once said, “I’ve died and gone to Christmas tree heaven!”

💔 Lee’s sister, Linda, and her husband, Mark Hoffmann, honor the fallen soldiers of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars with a memorial of thousands of personalized dog tags surrounding the orchard. It is a truly beautiful and somber place to pause and remember. https://www.iraqafghanveteranmemorialmn.org

Season Finale: When a Beautiful Giant Says “Timber!” 🌲🔥

Part 11 of our Lee Peterson Tree Farm series: the season ends, and a glorious beauty still has work to do. After being enjoyed as a showpiece for this amazing holy season by the family and onlookers through the windows—usually through New Year’s or longer—the tree finally comes down with a big “TIMBER!” onto a large tarp. Nature’s beautiful pine is then pulled out of the house the same way it came in, with the Ranger or snowmobile.

Once outside, the family cuts up the tree and gives it a second life: some becomes fuel for cozy winter bonfires, and some goes into the wood boiler to help heat their home. Not a piece is wasted!

This majestic beauty served for decades to provide shelter and food to birds and small critters; to absorb carbon dioxide and release fresh oxygen; and to help stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and protect water by slowing runoff and filtering rainwater. In this extraordinary Christmas tree’s place, many baby trees will be planted so future giants and ‘normal‑sized’ trees can start the cycle all over again.

Next in the series: an introduction to this amazing family who graciously shared their journey with us and whose creativity and generosity make these majestic giants unforgettable showpieces of this most important season!

Topple Trouble: When the Giant Tree Went Down 🌲😱

Part 10 of our Lee Peterson Tree Farm series: hands down, the wildest tree story this over-the-top crew has experienced happened the second year they put up a giant Christmas tree. The lights were on and ornaments had just begun to cover many of the branches. After a long day’s work, the whole family sat down to relax, turned on the fireplace, and started watching a movie together.

Mom and Dad dozed off on the floor. Suddenly, the kids screamed—Dad bolted up, yelled for Mom to roll, and the whole tree slowly crashed forward, with the very tip of the tree landing right inside the lit fireplace! Dad somehow summoned his Superman strength to yank the tree out of the fire, and, by the grace of God, the tree didn’t catch fire! Mom, meanwhile, crawled out from under the branches without a scratch.

The family got the tree standing again, made sure it was secured properly, and started decorating all over again.

Next in the series: a showpiece’s finale—when the most wonderful season is over, what happens to a massive beauty?

Decking the Majestic Giant: Lights, Ladders, and Lots of Love 🌲✨

Part 8 of our Lee Peterson Tree Farm series: now that this naturally beautiful centerpiece is standing tall, it’s time to dress her up for the most meaningful season of the year, and this experienced tree family has their decorating process down to an science!

The lighted star topper is always first in line to “start” the lighting process. To safely reach every branch, an extension ladder plus 12-, 8-, and 6-foot step ladders are used. Putting on the lights usually takes a full long day, with garland or ribbon added that same day or next. Each section of lights is 100 feet long, and three sections are connected to make one 300 foot run. This is repeated four times, making ~1,200 feet of lights total, or ~4,800 lights illuminating this sparkling tree as she deserves! Ornaments come after the lights and can take another 3–4 days. Sometimes the best “ornaments” are the ones God has already provided—like a little nest discovered in one of their former trees!

From beginning to end, decorating takes about 4–5 days. That may sound like a long time, but it’s a huge improvement from the original two-week effort! For this inspired, worker-bee family, it’s a highlight of the year. They love knowing that passersby enjoy the beauty glistening through their windows, and they happily share a visual story of how this holy season shines in their home.

Next in the series: a glimpse of this talented family’s holiday showpieces from years past.

Majestic Giants Need Majestic Tree Stands 🌲🪚

Part 7 of our Lee Peterson Tree Farm series: now that this magnificent White Spruce is up, its 8+ inch diameter stump is safely snuggled into a custom-built stand made by the family’s patriarch. The tree stand is an X-shaped frame about 5 feet wide, built from painted 2x4s. In its center sits a 5 gallon bucket, surrounded by cleats for ropes to hold the tree steady and secure. The bucket holds about 3 gallons of water and gets topped off twice a day with 1.0–1.5 gallons each time so this 19-foot, 2-inch showpiece can stay fresh through the season while illuminating their beautiful home.

TO EVERYONE WITH A REAL TREE IN THEIR HOME:
1. MAKE SURE THE STAND NEVER RUNS DRY.
Check the water level MORNING and EVENING and refill as needed.
2. KEEP TREES AWAY FROM HEAT VENTS and DIRECT HEAT SOURCES.

But what happens when a tree pushes the limits and is just a little too tall for the ceiling? The answer is in this video from a previous "oops" moment: out comes the chainsaw! After a careful trim, someone gets the lucky job of cleaning up all that fresh sawdust!

Next up in our series: turning this towering beauty into a fully decorated masterpiece!
