Remember this cutie!?

Our sweet little “pearl” is a growing girl! Don’t tell the other calves but this girl is my favorite haha!

Growing like a w**d, and I also have my fingers crossed she won’t shed her brown calf fur…. Will she stay brown? Or shed and become black?

Have you ever noticed that many young calves have a soft, light brown coat, even if they’ll grow up to be jet black?

That’s completely normal! Calves are born with what’s called a baby coat. This fuzzy, brownish hair helps keep them warm and protected during their first weeks of life. As they grow, they shed that baby coat and their mature hair comes in, revealing the color they’ll have as adults.

So if you see one of our future black cows looking a little brown, don’t worry! They’re just growing into their permanent coat.

Nature has a pretty neat way of reminding us that everyone changes as they grow!

Happy Cow Appreciation Day! 🐄❤️

It’s funny to think about how much these animals have shaped our lives.

Josh grew up helping his grandpa care for cattle, learning the value of hard work, responsibility, and what it means to care for livestock. Grace didn’t grow up with cows, but once they became part of her life, they completely changed the path she was on.

Because of cows, we found a passion that became a career. We’ve met incredible people, been given opportunities we never imagined, and built a life centered around agriculture. Truthfully, if it weren’t for cows, there’s a good chance we never would have crossed paths, and Peaks Forage & Livestock wouldn’t exist.

The herd we have today didn’t happen overnight. It started with a dream, a few cows, and a lot of faith and hard work. Every calf born, every early morning, every late-night check, every success, and even every challenge has helped shape who we are.

To some, they’re just cows. To us, they’re the reason for so many of our favorite memories, lifelong friendships, career opportunities, and the future we’re building together.

So today we’re celebrating the girls out in the pasture, especially our hardworking mama cows. Thank you for all you do, for the calves you raise, and for making this life possible.

These girls look happy to see the rain!

After weeks of scorching temperatures and what feels like never-ending drought, Mother Nature finally gave us a break.

When I went to check the cows yesterday evening, they weren’t standing around…they were running, bucking, kicking, and acting like calves again! If you’ve ever wondered whether cows enjoy the rain… this is your answer.

While cattle don’t necessarily love getting soaked, they absolutely appreciate the relief that rain brings. Cooler temperatures reduce heat stress, fresh rain perks up pastures, and many cattle become noticeably more active and playful once the heat breaks.

Yesterday’s rain wasn’t just good for the grass, it was good for the cows too. And watching them celebrate made every drop worth it.

New Bull Calf!!

We got to the farm early this morning to set up a new pasture for the girls to go into. As I was driving out to check on another cow that had a calf the day before, I spotted 83 with a water bag hanging out.

I left her alone, and came back about two hours later … and p**f, a new baby!!

A healthy bull calf!! Momma & baby are doing great:)

It’s weaning time!!

These two heifers were weaned off mom today and put in with our replacement heifers!

Weaning season is an important milestone on the farm, and while it can be stressful for both calves and cows at first, it plays a critical role in the health and success of the entire herd.

For calves, weaning encourages them to become independent and transition to a forage and feed based diet. This helps develop their rumen, supports healthy growth, and prepares them for the next stage of production. Calves that learn to eat and drink well on their own are set up for greater success down the road.

For cows, weaning provides a much-needed break. Lactation is one of the most demanding periods of a cow’s life, requiring large amounts of energy and nutrients. Once the calf is weaned, cows can begin rebuilding body condition before winter and prepare for the next breeding and calving season.

While there may be a few days of extra bawling across the pasture, the long-term benefits make weaning an essential management practice for a healthy and productive cow herd.

Cheers to Hay Season 2026!!

This drought may be putting a hurtin on us farmers, but that won’t stop up from doing the best we can to continue to make good forage for our cows to eat during the winter!!
