A Texas poacher was sentenced to spend every weekend of deer season in jail for five years. John Walker Drinnon of Whitesboro killed a 19-point buck in Grayson County, Texas, but there were two big problems. Grayson County was archery-only for deer, and he shot the buck with a rifle on private property. After he was convicted, the judge gave him five years of probation, ordered him to pay more than $18,000 in civil restitution, banned him from buying a hunting license while on probation, and then added the part that made the story famous. Every weekend during deer season, while everyone else was in the woods, he had to report to jail. That might be one of the most fitting poaching punishments I’ve ever heard.

Two Montana men are facing felony charges after wildlife officers allegedly discovered 223 dead ducks tied to the pair during the 2026 waterfowl season.

According to investigators, a Montana game warden checked the hunters along the Sun River on January 14 and reportedly found 66 ducks at the scene alone. Montana’s legal limit in that area is 7 ducks per hunter per day with a possession limit of 21 birds.

Authorities later searched a shop connected to one of the men and allegedly found additional ducks, some fresh and some already processed. In total, officers counted 223 ducks, including roughly 120 birds reportedly killed over a two day period.

Court documents state one of the hunters allegedly admitted he “lost count” and wanted enough meat to last the year.

If convicted, the men could face fines up to $50,000, prison time, and suspension of hunting privileges.

Undercover investigation takes down poaching ring.

In Ohio, a two-year undercover operation by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources exposed a group of Michigan men who crossed state lines to illegally kill deer.

According to the investigation, officers gathered photos, videos, and firsthand evidence of repeated violations.

The ring leaders of the operation include:
• James Barrett (Harrison Township, MI)
• Todd Brown (Atlanta, MI)
• Paul Laurain (Sterling Heights, MI)
• James Laurain (Sterling Heights, MI)
• Jonathan Ricker (Washington Township, MI)

Investigators documented a pattern of illegal activity, including:
• Jacklighting (spotlighting deer at night)
• Shooting deer from vehicles
• Hunting without proper nonresident licenses and permits
• Failing to game check deer
• Providing false information to cover it up

In total, 11 hunters were charged, with multiple individuals traveling from Michigan into Ohio specifically to poach.

These men deliberately came to Ohio to shoot deer illegally and steal the resource from actual hunters.
