Max completed his internship this August and we were so thankful to have him!
He was an eager & fast learner, always willing to help with any job or task no matter how small or big. He did a great job rolling with the punches of dairy farming & we wish him the best as he continues his time at Virginia Tech studying Dairy Science with plans to attend vet school after! 🐮🩺
Here are some remarks from Max about his summer! ⬇️
My favorite thing I learned was the whole milking process- from stripping the teat to the iodine dip to putting on the milker. This helped me build a relationship with the cows and earn their trust. Bonus favorite experience was working the farmers market because I loved talking to customers and building the farm to table relationships.
My favorite memory was helping deliver baby Dakota. This really was the first time I’ve actually helped deliver a calf and not just watch so it is something i will definitely never forget.
The most unexpected part occurred when I was cleaning the poll barn and one of the heifers mounted me. She practically knocked me down and I had to climb out from under her. By the end of the internship, I really got good and spotting and identifying when a cow was in heat 😂
Overall, I had a wonderful time at BBDairy. I learned so much about herd health management and how it connects to their daily life and the products we produce. While it was plenty of hard work and long days, it was all worth it to see the cows and customers happy. Even though I was only in Bel Air for 2 months, I was tremendously proud to say I was apart of Broom’s Bloom.
