Ancient Garden Organic Farm

Ancient Garden Organic Farm The farm is dedicated to producing organic vegetables, herbs, grains, friut and critters. 2.07 acres.

The property was fallow for a couple of decades and overrun with elm trees. The soil is depleted and will take many years to build to organic levels. It will take at least three years to build the garden to the point of providing food for ourselves and thereafter begin to provide income.

First going inside the hive since the swarm moved in last summer. After being so badly attacked by the last batch I decided to get a full suit. I was rather surprised that only about half of the hive had combs in it so just put the 3 bars i had pulled back and will leave them alone for a few months.

Looks like a swarm has found the beehive. I cracked it open and didn't see any combs yet just a bunch of bees. After losing two colonies I sure hope this one takes hold and thrives. Last swarm was meaner than snot so doubt this bunch will be any friendlier.

The farm has been put on hold for a while as I just had a total shoulder replacement and expected 6 week recovery period. So nothing will be grown this year and all the weeds will remain until at some point I can once again start bringing a bed at a time back to active status. The drought really is taking it's toll this year. Lost all of the grapes except one and a few fruit trees. Expect the water table has dropped considerably.

Not good. The end of February and the apricots are already in bloom.

Ordered seeds for the garden. Even though I saved a lot of seeds from last year's garden it still cost $85 to get the other seeds this year. Ouch.

Ordered 26 chicks. Five Ameraucanas which lay blueish or greenish eggs, six Cuckoo Marans which lay really dark chocolate colored eggs, and 15 assorted heavy breed chicks which could be any of five different types of good egg layers. Its kinda hard to count a bunch of chickens milling about but I think we have 20 now, including one rooster; so a few of the hens will end up in the crockpot as the new chicks reach laying age. They are due to arrive on March 5thish.

All those holes in the ground and piled up dirt is from the stumps I've been digging out; over 20 so far and about that or more to go. The dark pile in the center background is all stumps...Jessie drug a bunch of them off but it still gives you an idea.
