Bean growers gather behind the Everglades Experiment Station lab with Herman Wedgworth, then the station’s plant pathologist.

His work on yellowing beans traced the problem to a manganese shortage in Everglades soil. In 1932, he started the fertilizer business that’s still family owned today.

Sugarcane planting is underway across the Everglades Agricultural Area, right here in Belle Glade.

This crop runs deep in our roots. In 1960, George Wedgworth founded the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida right here in Belle Glade, helping build the sugar industry that still shapes this region today.
