The first woman to run this company. 🌱

When leadership landed on her shoulders in 1938, Ruth Wedgworth didn't hesitate. She put on boots and went to work in the fields herself, at a time when a woman running an agricultural operation wasn't just uncommon… it was unheard of.

She didn't just keep the business going. She grew it, expanding the farm to thousands of acres and running three companies at once through the 40s, 50s, and 60s. In 1975, she became the first woman named Belle Glade's "Man of the Year." She went on to be named
Florida's Woman of the Year in Agriculture and was inducted into the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1988.

Our team spent time at The Landscape Show in Orlando this week, connecting with growers, suppliers, and industry partners from across Florida's green industry.

Events like this are a reminder that what happens in the field is backed by a much bigger network, one built on shared knowledge and a commitment to doing right by the industry.

Every grower has been down at least one of these paths before.

Guessing and hoping the numbers work out. Copying whatever the neighbor's running, because it's worked for them, so it should work for you too. Or building a program off real data, real soil and tissue samples, and a conversation with someone who's actually walked your field.

Only one of those paths gets you consistent results season after season. The other two just get you there eventually, if you're lucky.

A) Guessing and hoping for the best
B) Real data, real conversations, real results
C) Copying whatever the neighbor's doing

There's a new pest making the rounds, and it's hitting close to home.

The pasture mealybug was first found in Florida this past May, and it's already spread to 15 counties, including several right here in our growing region. It feeds on sugarcane and pasture grasses, and it can take down a healthy field in a matter of weeks.

Right now, there's no established treatment. Researchers at UF/IFAS are working on it, and an emergency pesticide option is under review. Until then, the best thing growers can do is watch their fields closely; look for browning grass or small white insects on the blades, and report anything suspicious to FDACS or your local UF/IFAS Extension office.

We'll keep you updated as more comes out. In the meantime, keep an eye on your fields, and reach out to your Wedgworth Ag Advisor if you want a second set of eyes out there. 🌾

It's National Water Quality Month, and there's a story in our own backyard worth telling.

Farmers in the Everglades Agricultural Area operate under some of the strictest water quality requirements in the country.

Federal law requires a 25% reduction in phosphorus leaving their farms.

For almost 30 years, they've beaten that number, some years by more than double.
