Hickory Ponds Farm Our animals (and us!) free range on just under 50 acres of pasture and woods. We steward rescue horses, donkeys, alpacas, llama, sheep and pigs.

We hit up Newhall meat locker on Friday and got some amazing stuff! Cheddar jalapeño breakfast sausages, jalapeño bacon!!! Their bacon is super affordable ($6.50/ #) and everything we tried was absolutely delicious. It's worth a day trip to stock up your freezer with locally sourced meat products!

I was opening the chicken coop when I heard a cat crying for help. I walked past the coop and the cries kept getting louder. I was looking all around and couldn't find the cat! Then I looked up to find Hades about 20 feet up in a hickory tree! Something must have scared him up there, but this was definitely a first for us! I would like to think he used the tools I gave him to get down, but we'll never know.

I almost pulled her down thinking it was a dead leaf. When I'm in the garden, I feel this sense of hyper awareness of my surroundings. I want to see, hear, and appreciate everything. This awareness has been growing for me since being on our land, and I truly appreciate the gifts of being able to be more aware. From little spiders, ladybugs, aphids, white moths, snakes, dragonflies....the more we keep our space friendly to these species, the more I see. This is the first I've seen in over 20 years here in Iowa. We gotta be doing something right!!!

Fall mushroom season is upon us! And on our last forage, we found pear shaped puffballs, which I had never seen or used before. They have the texture of a crimini/button mushrooms, so you can use them in any recipe that calls for them. I really enjoy smothered chops, but when mushrooms are involved, you really don't NEED the meat. Oh, and thos meal wasn't just log to table, it was farm to table as well! The only ingredients NOT from our farm were the butter for the mashed potatoes, and the grated parm to finish. Stick around for mushroom tips and content!

We love when the rain ends in the fall, because that means...Mushrooms! Today we found a new to us choice edible, the pear shaped puffball, or stump puffball. It's only edible when it's very young and the inside flesh is bright white. We got so lucky finding these Today! Carmen Nicole spotted them, and I was stoked to make them for dinner tonight. Follow along to see what I did with them!

Leonard had his big boy day at the vet Monday. We're sad to see his fluffed nutters go, but the hormones were just too much for us to handle. The hormones are what led to Ophelia getting a small injury and infection, that landed her at the vet with Leonard. But, both are healing and are happy, healthy pupper dogs!

This guy has guilty written all over is face. Beastie is our mini bull, and he does what he wants. But he's a good bull and a manageable size for us, we'll take a little broken fence for a Bull with his temperament!
