We recently had 3 beef butchered.
Hanging weights were: 950, 857 & 837 😳😱
First steaks 🥩 have been eaten and getting multiple reports about flavor, tenderness and tastiness!
Often times we hear how grass raised beef should be so cheap because they are raised off of growing pastures. Although we grain feed consider the cost even if we raise our own, we give up the income that crops can be sold for which these days is a good bit especially if we are non-gmo/organic, fertilizer costs that have skyrocketed (2021 we paid $1800, 2022 was quoted over $3000 - we found a new supplier). Because summer pastures wouldn’t provide enough food for spring-fall without it, let alone winter months for fertilizing hay fields.
In addition, consider the price of fuel and most tractors are deisel. Hay fields are driven over every inch 3x on average per hay cutting, with 3-4 cuttings, that’s driving all fields 9-12 times, plus another round at minimum for fertilizer, maybe two. Let’s talk about mineral for the cattle, net wrap or custom baling help to bale and wrap bales. How about repairs for the barn and equipment. None of that is considering vet fees if one has trouble delivering and we can’t fix the issue, or hoof trimming which is roughly $1250 for our head annually.
This also doesn’t consider fence repair, gates that get broken {1800 # cows are so hard on things} and need replaced, and the list goes on. It also doesn’t consider of the weather is bad and hay didn’t grow well during the summer and hay needs purchased as well as straw bales for winter bedding and calving.
When people are willing to pay $15-20/lb from the store for a steak and $20-45 for a steak dinner eating out, please don’t complain to local farmers for charging $3.50-4.00/lb for the whole beef when currently hamburger is more than that and steaks and roasts considerable more. Next time everything seems like it should be so much cheaper, also consider the loss we endure because nature is cruel and everything can’t be saved, and our time to work hours after work shouldn’t be free but is never included as a labor cost in your beef.
Off my soapbox 🧼 📦 for now….
Enjoy your evening. Spring is just over 7 weeks away. 🌾🌱☘️
