It sure is cold out! But our cattle aren’t!
Cattle naturally grow a winter coat in the fall as the daylight hours shorten. The sunlight signals their body to grow thicker and longer hair to prepare for cold weather. During cold weather their hair insulates and warms their bodies enough that snow will lay on top!
We also take extra measures to keep our cattle cozy in this weather, such as providing extra bedding and a cozy barn for them to sleep in. We also provide hay to them 24/7. As they eat, the fermentation process in their rumen generates heat. It’s like having a built in furnace! We also make sure to keep our water troughs full, and we break ice multiple times a day to make sure the cows always have access to clean water.
Farmers all across America are fighting this cold to keep food on your table. Support local farmers and eat local beef!🥩🐮
