What would a farm be without pigs? One of the most underutilized animals on most home/farmsteads, here they are one of our best employees.
We raise Gloucestershire Old Spots and these gentle giants are the best input to outpost converters on our farm. Need an area CLEARED? Pigs. Need a woodchip pile leveled? Pigs. Need a place for scraps? Pigs. Need to have the garden area plant ready? Pigs. Need a perimeter guardian or preditor deterant? Pigs.
Since adding GOS to our farm, we have experienced a huge drop, in not only predator pressure, but also in casualties (we have had zero losses to predators going on 3 years, now). I could ramble on about how versitile they are but everything can be summarized in this picture. This is our boar (R) and one of our sows (L) sharing some garden scraps while my children play all over them and train for horse riding. I was told by commercial farmers everything I could expect and how unpredictable these animals are.... while I always heed wisdom to avoid calamity, I can say without hesitation that these pigs are nothing like what I prepared for.
One of our most valuable assets, they fill freezers, grow the most amazing gardens and have reduced days of back breaking work to a leisurely past time.

There are not enough ways to express my appreciating of this magnificent heritage breed - except that
Gloucestershire Old Spots have a forever spot on our farm.

Let's talk pigs & impaction.

Pigs are one of our best employees, our primary way of clearing areas too dense for me to machete, eliminating regrowth I don't want and they are worth their weight in gold over here. However, once the area is cleared/when you run out of space or when you are working with limited space pigs end up being on dirt.

Right now, our pigs are on dirt - some may call pasture - but it's the remains of thousands of pounts of buggy garden treats, slop buckets, yard clippings and spent hay. We are a zero waste farm- everything goes back into building soil. While this is super rewarding - it comes with it's own problems.

The main problem that most will run into is IMPACTION.

HOW DO WE AVOID THIS? CASTOR OIL & an essential oil blend called "DigestZen" by dōterra.

I have read alot of interesting blogs of how to "give" castor oil to pigs. We raise GOS, a heritage breed that prefers a balanced diet - they will take castor oil like a spoon full of sugar.

No fuss, no extra equipment- just a solid spoon they can't chew through.

We are busy harvesting Moringa Pods and our last round of Moringa leaves for the season. Seeds from the '26 season will be available on our Etsy soon!

I believe it is the time of year.... this is the kind of look you give when 7 girls break into your pen, steal your breakfast, and you know smiles can pay for seconds....

Have to brag on and thank Ms. Szofia and her sister of Happy Herd Services for coming out on such short notice! I was so busy watching/asking questions, I forgot to take good pictures. Darlin', our never-so-little heifer, had a hoof split and was shifting weight. These ladies made it out this morning, got her loaded with minimal effort and had her balanced and back in the paddock in no time - we were able to get Handsome's done as well!

That to say, 10/10 recommend them for any hooves needing attention, it was an excellent experience!
These ladies are Florida based and work country, yes country, wide.
