Just 12 days after posting the greatest day ever recorded for 6-weight steers, the market has experienced a dramatic reversal.
On Monday, the national weighted average for 600–699 lb steers fell to $391.78/cwt, marking the first time in 2026 that the national average has dropped below the $400 mark.

The decline comes on the heels of an extraordinary day on July 8, when the national weighted average climbed to $463.82/cwt—the highest national weighted average for 6-weight steers in U.S. history.

That historic rally was fueled by an unprecedented sale at Bassett Livestock Auction (Bassett, Nebraska), which dominated the nation's top market reports. Bassett produced the 10 highest 6-weight steer sales in the country that day, including the three highest prices ever recorded in U.S. history for 6-weight steers, as well as the fifth-highest price on record.
