WHY SOME OF THE BEST HORSE TRAINERS SEEM DISTANT...

It isn't that your horse trainer doesn't like you.

Some of the best trainers and competitors in the horse industry are introverts. For many of us, that's how our connection with horses started in the first place.

While a lot of people grew up learning how to fit in, seek approval, and they learned how to thrive in crowds... many of the future trainers found peace in a barn, a pasture, or on the back of a horse. Horses became the place where life made sense to them.

The truth is... Most trainers don't get burned out from training horses. They get burned out from people.

They get burned out on the nonstop constant phone calls. The messages. The expectations. The pressure. The difficult conversations. The emotional weight that comes with serving the public.

And those competitors who sometimes seem stuck-up? Many of them aren't arrogant at all. They're simply people who recharge in solitude instead of crowds.

The trainers and competitors who stay in this industry for years usually learn how to manage that part of themselves. They learn when to socialize, when to serve, and when they need to step away long enough to reset.

So if your trainer goes quiet for a while... or that competitor you've always admired disappears for a few days...

Don't automatically assume they're upset with you. They may simply be doing what they have to do to protect their own mental energy so they can come back and give their best to their horses, their clients, and the people who depend on them.

This is a topic that barely gets talked about at all in our industry...

Straitz. The one in a million horse. The one that taught me that I could literally do anything with a horse. The one that taught me patience and true love. My first buckskin. ā¤ļø I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. Even to get rid of the heartbreak of losing him.

He was the bestest boy.

I'll never forget.

ā™”šŸ“ā™”

A few days ago, I stood in front of his stall longer than I meant to.
Not doing anything. Just… standing.
The gate was closed, but it felt like something else had shut too.

And I thought — what if we could forget?
Forget the last goodbye.
Forget how quiet it’s been since.
Forget how your hands still move on autopilot to grab his tack — only to remember, a second too late.

Would I do it?
Would I erase the ache of walking past the empty stall every morning?
Would I silence the instinct to turn my head, thinking I hear his soft nicker — only to face the stillness?

Maybe.
But then…

I'd lose the warmth too.
The first time he leaned into my touch.
The way his ears flicked when I said his name.
The weight of his trust, heavier and more sacred than any ribbon I ever won.

I’d lose the scent of sun-warmed coat, the quiet rhythm of hooves in the sand, the heartbeat that matched mine on cold, early mornings.

The ache is sharp — yes.
But it’s the echo of something real.
Of something that mattered.

So no, I won’t trade it.
Not for forgetting. Not for peace.

Because he made me more than a rider.
He made me someone who remembers.

"Blessed Are The Husbandsā€
written by Kelly Parker

Blessed are the husbands of horse women
Who have no interest in horses
But love our passions because they love us.

Blessed are the husbands
Who stack hay with not a cross word
And offer to pull the trailer
To God knows where
And stay all day
To watch us do what we love.

Blessed are the husbands
Who have the patience to listen
To our every conversation
About bits and bad ground
And teeth floats and good farriers.

Blessed are the husbands
Who don’t complain about the money
Because soon it will become
feed and entry fees and vet bills.

Blessed are the husbands
Who have the kindness
To sit in the stall with us overnight
On foal watch, or colic,
Or to investigate a strange sound.

Blessed are the husbands
Who possess the wisdom
To let us chase our dreams
And leave the sink full of dishes
And know how we lie
ā€œJust an hour at the barnā€

Blessed are the husbands
Sent to horse women with a note from God
ā€œTreasure this one, for he is so rare
He cannot be replacedā€

In the horse industry, it’s easy to overlook our silent supporters. Our husbands are the unsung heroes of this wild and crazy ride.

ā€œDon’t be a victim. Be busy with your horse so you stay out of trouble – otherwise, trouble will come and find you. Be assertive but don’t be aggressive, if you are aggressive you’ll make the horse flighty. The horse needs perimeters like anyone else. Give them guidance, support, rules. The same rules. Don’t change the game, don’t let them have excuses just cause of their past.....and love them.ā€ - Buck Brannaman

100% Truth. You have to WANT to make the changes.. not make excuses.

If you want to make progress as a horseman, you have to hold yourself accountable.

An instructor can tell you to open your left rein, but only you can actually open your left rein! I can tell you to step right. I can tell you to step right more, or reword it until you do it enough that your right seat bone drops down where it belongs. I can remind you to do it every 30 seconds. I can remind you again every time we change directions, or change gaits, or after your horse tripped. But none of my riders take a lesson with me every day! At some point you have to remember it and execute it all on your own. And isn’t that the type of rider you want to be???

I mean, When you are doing a dressage test, I can’t remind you to sit back in the corner or to not over bend the neck in the shoulder in.

The only time I am the head trainer is when I am instructing myself. Otherwise, I am always the assistant instructor and YOU, THE RIDER, HAVE to be your own master. I am merely the Layman who tells you where we are at in this project, and what step needs to happen next. You are the lead contractor who needs to make sure it gets done. (I know enough people who have major projects going on at their facility that maybe this is a really bad example! Lol but you get my drift hopefully)

I’m not sure how I made it through the levels as far as I did knowing how long it took me to get accountable on actually keeping my inside rein open šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø. Now I’ve realized how often I, just for a moment, open my outside rein when I’m supposed to be using my inside leg. I’m NOT letting this habit go on for years. I’m not. I’m not. I’m not working on anything else until I’m so consciously competent when I do allow my subconscious to take over, it sticks! Even then, I’ll be checking in regularly.

I had an adult student say that she’s always ride with puppy paws/piano hands (thumbs turned in, fingernails posted down) and ā€œgood luck changing itā€. My tone was light hearted, because that’s who I am, but I basically told her that if she can’t hold herself accountable for something so easy to fix, get off the horse- why bother! It helped that I gave her the REASONS why it was important- it isn’t just to be pretty. But fixing it was hard for her because it’s so tough to turn her wrist- it was ā€œhardā€ because it took focus.

šŸŽ Put in the focus. Hold yourself accountable....

May 3rd. The birth date of my heart horse. Oh the stories my boy could tell of the hours he and I spent together. I miss him every single day since he passed. He was definitely one of the great ones! ā¤ļø

What if we asked the old horse in heaven about the best moments of his life? Do you think he would talk about the ribbons he won or the points he earned? No. He would talk about the hours you spent grazing him and playing with his mane. He would talk about your kind hands. He would talk about the sound of your car when you pulled up to the barn, knowing you had a bag of carrots for him. He would talk about the laughter of the child who trotted for the first time on him. He would talk about how their little hands gave such gentle pets on his nose. He would talk about the times you came out in the middle of a snow storm to make sure he was okay. He would talk about the time you stayed up all night with him when he was sick and scared and confused. He would talk about the times you cried on his shoulder, and while he didn’t know why, he understood. He would talk about galloping through green pastures and playing with his friends. He would talk about naps in the sun. And finally, he would talk about when he was hurting so much in this earthly existence, you set him free. He knows the decision literally broke your heart in half, but his pain was over and he will greet you again when it is time. Cherish the small moments with your horses. They are what he remembers. šŸ’™
