This Juneteenth Belleville Heart Garden reflects on our mission to create a space where all are seen, valued and welcomed.
Years ago, garden stewards worked with artist Cbabi Bayoc to bring this beautiful artwork to the garden. Not long after its installation during Covid, the City of Belleville hosted "Prom Around Town" with photo stops set up around downtown for kids to get a photo in their prom regalia, since there would be no actual prom. BHG was not listed as a stop, and yet...all day long, car after car pulled up and beautiful, sparkly, prom ready black girls climbed out to go get a photo. The same thing happened at graduation.
Representation matters, and BHG is proud to provide a space to mark joy. The garden runs on volunteers and new faces are always welcome. There are opportunities to contribute for all ages and abilities, and we have tools to share. We invite you to join us, and be a part of something beautiful. Saturdays from 7:30-9:30 and Wednesdays from 6-7:30, at 806 S High Street in Belleville.
