Over the river and through the woods, to Saint Sixtus Abbey for some "Westy" I go!

After many years hoping to eventually visit a Trappist brewery and buy some beer in person, I took a road trip today and picked up 2 cases of the "Trappist Westvleteren 12." The journey was a lot of fun and I hope you enjoy these pics of the adventure.

As for my review of the beer itself, I will simply say it is the most enjoyable 10% beer I've ever tried. ;^P

Pulled these out of my advent calendar today. 🎄May be I should share some pics of the calendar… 😶‍🌫️

What does any respectable homebrewer do when they arrive in Germany? Grab some local beer, of course! Das Starke Dunkle Bockbier seems like a good place to start. :)

Leaving the US to spend some time in the motherland of beer seemed like a fitting occasion to finish off batch #1. Interestingly enough, the Caribou Slobber aged well, though it did end up particularly mild. :)

These two bottles are the last remaining bottles from the first batch of homebrew I brewed seven years ago. I brewed another 98 batches after that and look forward to brewing again after I return to the US four years from now.

If you've ever wondered what little gems a homebrewer stashes in their cellar, here's an example of the brews I cherry-picked from mine tonight. Most of these have been quietly aging for 4 or more years and I have collected the commercial brews during my travels around the world.

If you have questions about what you see or why I chose to select any of these, please ask! :)

My beverage of choice tonight was a 2014 Hertog Jan Grand Prestige. OMG, it aged very well. It is still as enjoyable as it was fresh, but it is far more "drinkable" now.

I will do my best to properly enjoy these over the next two weeks and look forward to any discussion about these brews. ;^P

The brew kettle fires may have been dormant a while, but the cellar was still fully operational! These lovely brews are aged and ready for the holiday season. Time to make some room in the beer fridge!

Happy Thanksgiving! 8^)
