Before getting married in 2013, we both talked about what were the things in life we both wanted, and we both wanted the same things. We wanted our own land, out of the hustle bustle of the city, a relaxing place in nature. Also, place where we could grow our own non processed market foods. Those are the reasons that lead to Raspberry Hill Homestead. We found a beautiful piece of property, a beaut
iful home for us sitting on 20 acres with pasture areas, woods, along with a small pond. We have put a lot of work into making it not only our home, but a nice place to raise our own food. It is a work in progress, and we are learning new techniques everyday. We now have a small flock of birds, chickens, ducks and Peafowl. We are also working on a registered breeding line of American Guinea Hogs. After multiple hours of research we decided to go with both these breeds, because they were smaller and more efficient for a smaller homestead. The Kinder goats are a smaller yet, meaty goat with great milking qualities, and the AGH, for its smaller stature, and ease of manageability for both. The American Guinea hog has a wonderful flavor, and used in a lot of gourmet restaurants. So it is more of a quality over quantity food. Along with both breeds of animal having a very docile and loving nature it seemed like the perfect fit. They are also listed on the Livestock Conservancy site as threatened. In the future we will be also adding more heritage geese and ducks, and chickens that are Threatened or critical from the livestock conservation page to bring back the declining numbers from Heritage breed livestock. We have had our up’s and downs and struggles as you can imagine any city folks would. But it has also been very rewarding. Stay a while and follow our journey into our new life.
