Sissom Valais and TBC Valais Farm will be attending this Fall. We are not bringing sheep this year but we look forward to all the amazing classes, beautiful sheep, and wonderful friends.

This event features a Valais Blacknose Sheep Show and Grading, educational workshops led by top international breeders and industry experts, sponsor engagement and networking opportunities, and concludes with a live auction and sale on Saturday.

First time out on their new dry lot. I think they like it.

This wet stretch builds on a rainy year overall, with annual precipitation currently sitting 6.71 inches above normal. It is like a jungle here and the worms are loving it. Rain almost every morning followed by hot and humid afternoons. But the weatherman says it should level out the last week of August and September with more dry than wet conditions.

And so it begins… building the dry lot. There will be some terracing with cinderblocks I believe. Unless someone has a better idea of what to use. 😀

I am realizing how many sheep producers maintain dry lots for their sheep. They are useful.

Raising lambs in hot, humid midwestern weather is very hard. Shade is needed with fresh air, not in a dusty, dirty barn or a wet from humidity, worm-filled grassy field.

To fix this, we are setting up gravel screening pens near shade trees to keep lambs cool and safe from parasites.

We will have to keep it clean daily. Dropped hay and f***l matter needs fo be removed.

We started dumping their water tank daily and putting in fresh, cool water. And adding electrolytes on very hot days.

We started feeding Bioworma to hopefully reduce the worm population in their waste.

We are determined to be prepared for another summer like this.

So ready for lower temps and lower humidity.
