A couple years ago I started meeting regularly with a wonderful group of women who play with wool. I’m so grateful to share this love with these dear friends. And how beautiful to be spinning wool and knitting beautiful garments while showering each other with stories, wisdom and care.. infusing our creations with the love of others.

Yesterday we played with colors. Painting roving that will be spun up into yarn. Excited for these two to dry out so I can start spinning them up!

The final step of preparing wool before the knitting begins! Working with this fiber feels so ancestral to me, and I have been really enjoying the slow process. I raised this beautiful sheep, Cinnamon is her name, carded and spun the wool, and finally plied it and washed it. Lately I’ve been enjoying spinning in the grease, which means you don’t wash the wool before spinning it. It’s sticky and dirty and delicious, I love it. But now it’s clean and fluffy and smells like sheep running in a field of fragrant flowers.

Hey there! It’s been awhile since I’ve been active on here, so I thought I would give a little intro and update. My name is Grace, also called Grakka. I’m a clinical herbalist, farmer, wool worker, and metal smith. This page is dedicated to my crafts, specifically my herbal craft. I love teaching people about the wonders of plants and how they can support our physical, mental, and emotional well being. I offer one on one sessions with folks who are seeking support through herbal medicine and nutrition. I prioritize holding space for folks that feels safe and accepting, aiming to meet the client wherever they’re at. I care deeply for people and feel passionate about supporting folks in the ways I can with the tools I have. Working with plants has changed my life and I’m here to offer my expertise and guidance in this field. Please reach out if you would like to know more about my work as a clinical herbalist or would like to work with me! I primarily work with clients over zoom these days, so being in the same town isn’t necessary.

Thanks for reading 🌱

Day 1 of the
Started off the day with dandelion coffee. Then for breakfast I made acorn pancakes with wild blueberries, sautéed nettles and fiddleheads, and sockeye salmon I canned last fall. All topped off with bittercress. It has begun, here we go!

Red Alder (Alnus rubra) catkin harvest for the - alder catkins are a good source of protein and can be eaten fresh or cooked. They’re commonly boiled or ground into a powder to thicken soups. The catkins contain pollen, which is a good source of vitamins and minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron.

Red alder also has loads of medicinal qualities. I love making a spring oil with the buds and twigs of this tree. It is a great alternative and ends up smelling like green apples!

More on my alder catkin prep soon 🍃

Preparing more acorns for ! Excited and nervous to be a part of this project! Starting in April, I will be eating only wild foods. The participants in this trial will be tracking changes in how they feel, along with blood and stool tests to see what changes occur in the body when one only eats wild foods local to their environment. I have taken a slight hiatus with my prep work for this, but as spring begins to slowly emerge, I’m getting back into it and will be continuing to post updates along the way.

I’ve been cracking so many acorns to make acorn flour, which will be one of my main staple foods. Because acorns are so high in tannins, it’s necessary to leach them (remove tannins) so they can be better digested and not make us sick. Because tannins are water soluble, it’s as simple as letting them soak in water, making sure you change out the water regularly. When the water starts to run more clear, and taste less astringent, you know that you have leached them enough.

In the Spring of 2025, I will be partaking in the Wildbiome Project. This project is led by one of my mentors and teachers, Monica Wilde, and consists of about 100 participants. For 1-3 months, participants in this study group will eat only wild foods that are local to their environment. I will be posting my process and findings along the way.

Living in Northwest Washington state, there are so many edible foods that one can survive off of. There are some things I do not and will not harvest, due to sustainability issues. Please do your own research if you’re out harvesting wild foods, and feel free to reach out if you have questions.

Check out to hear more about the project and see what other folks are doing!
