Yellow dahlias. I know most aren’t a fan. It’s like opening up a bag of skittles to find only yellow ones. But what if upon opening that bag there were a lot of red ones and some yellow were mixed in?

Personally, I think we need yellow dahlias, especially this miniature ball/miniature formal dec (jury is still out).

What do you think yellow yay or nay?

Hint: what two dahlias often get mixed up with one another?

Second hint: I became a dahlia sleuth to uncover the mix up and identify this dahlia correctly.

What are the seed and pollen parent?

Which of the two dahlias do you think is the seed parent?

This seedling is going into its fifth year and with too many tubers to count, I am making the decision this year on whether I will be culling it or not. Hard decisions but necessary.

This has been a fun seedling to watch over the years. It is going into its fourth year.

Various seedlings going into their second year. I’ve been sorting all these first year seedlings to find some of them to have rotted. They lived less than a year and it was a gift to see them in what was a glimpse.

Although sad as I had plans and dreams of what could be for them, it’s also a grace to know loss. It is what keeps me humble, to loosen the grips of control as much as I’d like to control and make plans.

This serves as a good reminder I am not the master of my domain, merely a steward of the land and the work I get to do. I find this to be the best place to start.

What lessons are you learning this season in the garden?

RIP: Finally preparing to plant and as I am pulling out last year’s first year seedlings, this promising waterlily seedling tuber had completely rotted. Par for the course, but still a bummer.

Looking forward to this seedling moving onto its third year. I'm reminded that sometimes we are fortunate to have the help of those who have come before us to do this work of breeding, and sometimes we don't.

Know that if you don't have the mentorship living near you to provide both encouragement and critical feedback, write down your goals, take notes on how you can do things better and stick to your course no matter what you're seeing on social media. Do you!

Part 1 of how I am starting my dahlia seeds. This year I am taking a different approach. I am still enlisting the blue shop paper towel method for some, but have primarily decided upon using these Glad boxes.

In part two, I will show how I will transplant them.

One thing I would like to emphasize in breeding dahlias is the difference between entering in the world as a hybridizer or a seed collector.

What does this mean?

In hybridizing one key element is you will be studious in your record keeping. You will gather seed from specific parent plants in the fall, and keep track of the germination & seed count.

In seed collecting, you are less concerned with this and have the freedom of throwing seeds into a container with other seed parents. You won’t be focused on germination rate or even care as much where they came from.

Neither is better than the other. Rather, it helps distinguish your goals and where you’re headed. The seed collecting side of things doesn’t require as much rigor and allows one to be a bit more whimsical in the approach.

Meanwhile, the hybridizer approach for starters can really help with narrowing in on what parent is good at making seed or pollen. This allows for less crossbreeding in genetics as well because you are literally doing the science of genetics.

What camp are you finding yourself in?

PS there is no right or wrong.

Some years are just not our years. Well laid plans and then life happens and it can feel like we should throw in the towel. I’m here to tell you to throw out sage advice on start dates or lilacs are blooming it must be time to plant dahlias—

—it’s closer to May 1st than April 1st by my calendar and I am starting mine today. It is what it is and I’ll post in my stories how I’m trying something new and what I’ve done in the past. I’ll save them in my highlights as well.
