I cracked open the hives today to check in on them and possibly harvest some spring honey. Found a frame where some new workers were emerging from their cells. This was a first for me, and sooo cool to witness!

I took my best bud Bear on a hike this afternoon to forage for Morel mushrooms. I was really hoping he would have an undiscovered talent for sniffing them out, as I haven’t found too many this year. Unfortunately, he has no such talent. He did, however, find a few dead things to roll in/eat. It was still a lovely walk with my boy (who is now freshly bathed).

Today I opened up a hive that we split in half earlier this spring to make sure they were still thriving. I could barely get the top brood box off it was so heavy with honey! Looks like we will be able to have a spring harvest this year. 🥳

We just finished planting 50+ black locust trees😮‍💨
I’ve heard them described as invasive many times, but they are native to southern Ohio, and I’m excited for what they can do for our little homestead!

These amazing trees are nitrogen fixers, and have rot resistant wood that is perfect for fence posts. We plan to use these as a natural hedge to separate pasture from our field.

Best of all, they have beautiful flowers that bees LOVE!

We’re the Holland family, and we moved to Bellville, OH almost 2 years ago to realize our dream of starting a homestead. For us, it was the ideal way to live out what we believe — stewarding God’s creation with care and intention. The more research we did on how we wanted to accomplish that, the more we fell in love with the concept of regenerative farming. It allows us to improve the soil, restore biodiversity, and enhance our ecosystem while growing our own produce and raising livestock with zero chemical inputs. We still have a lot to figure out, but the process has been so rewarding!

We are pursuing a life of self-sufficiency, not for independence alone, but to be more faithful, more grateful, and more connected to the blessings God provides each day!
