This page is up, but we have closed the farm. No, we don’t (and never did have) strawberries. Just wanted to put this up in case people find their way here. Thanks!

End of Season

Today I dropped off my quarterly employee tax reports. Last week I picked the last of the beans. This week I’ll scalp the last of the squash, if there is any still, sn**ch some eggplant (five tons left), some peppers (also 5 tons) and some of the tomatoes that aren’t too pretty now but still taste good. Making a few dozen quarts of ratatouille for canning tomorrow.

Reed will mow one last time. I’ll organize my leftover seeds and bring them in. We’ll clean up the tools. Make sure everything is put away.

It’s a time of endings.

As of this season, Meadow Rise Farm is putting the farm to bed. We’re officially “retired farmers.”

I want to thank so many people who have supported us over the years. You made our dream possible. I also want to thank the wonderful people who have worked for us for the past 10 years or so, when we got big enough that I couldn’t do it on my own. You are all my extended farm family. And of course, many thanks to my various farm markets over the years, especially Clintonville Farmers Market and Michelle White - world’s best market manager.

We had our best year ever in 2019, so I’m not counting this year. :D A number of things have combined to help us decide to hang up the hoes. Reed, as you know, had a spinal injury last year. He’s doing great, but some things are a bit much now. My online teaching duties are so overwhelming right now that I have time to do little else, and that will continue at least through spring semester. Overall, we’re just kinda tired.

I want to encourage you to continue to support Jennifer Johnson - my longest-lived, bestest worker — as she continues with her own farm business - Son Rise Acre. She’s continuing her work with the Richland Gro-Op, but she’s also industriously working some of the plots that we won’t be planting anymore. Check out her page and keep up with where you can buy her great produce next season.

And I’ll still make sure my fingernails stay stained - I want to plant a garden for ourselves. And we’ll have more time for granddaughters, maybe traveling, if the plague ever abates, and lazy Saturday mornings, and, well, who knows? That’s the fun part. We’ll find out.

Jen is selling these babies at the Bellville Farmers market this month. Along with cherry tomatoes, zucchini, ground cherries, kale, eggplant, and scallions. Reed and I are donating all but a small percentage to Jen so she can invest the money in her farm, Son Rise Acres, and then sell next year.

Right now she's growing on her plot for Richland Gro-Op, but she is working hard harvesting our stuff now that we're not attending a market.

Please visit her table tomorrow, and check out the other vendors there - always lots of good produce at Bellville Farmers Market, 9-12 on the Village Green.
