Anybody that is critical of the work ethic of today’s youth needs to show up at my tree farm during planting, shearing or harvesting. I texted 14 youth to see if they could help, 7 came, and most of the rest were at the Iowa state FFA convention. We planted 2100 little Christmas tree seedlings in 4 nights after school. Some volunteered to come early before school was out and they all stayed late, to 6 or 7 PM. Running an ice fishing auger to drill the holes is no picnic. I’m way behind with the auger in the middle.

The season is over! For the first time in about 5 years we did NOT sell a Christmas tree on the 24th of December, although we did sell three trees on the 23rd. We stay open until the end, can't disappoint some kid, you know.
So as long as I was not busy, I fertilized part of the trees now, instead of waiting until next spring.
Today is "tear down" day, and put everything away until next November. My roommate thinks I need counseling, just because I have 1500 seedling trees ordered for next spring, and I'll be 80 when they are harvested. I don't think so!

Two groups of pre-schoolers from Belmond-Klemme were out today. They now know that some evergreens are soft and some are prickly!

Forestry Field Day will be held at the Aldrich Tree Farm on Tue June 8 2010. Learn about Christmas trees or "Walnut and Other Fine Woods". We are planting many hardwoods for veneer logs for the grandchildren.

Enchanted Acres is near two tree farms: Carlson Tree Farm near Hampton and Aldrich Tree Farm of Belmond, Iowa. Thanks to an article inside "Fresh Pickings" magazine by Iowa Food & Family Project, I want to road trip to the Ice Cream Capitol of the World to visit Christmas Acres and enjoy a dish of Blue Bunny Peppermint Stick Ice Cream. P.S. A visit to the interactive Wells Museum would be a fun day trip for kids and adults alike! Look for a related link in the comments below.
