Papa Fred C McAtee
AFTER HOURS WITH FRED…
If you have been in our dealership it is likely you have met Fred McAtee. He been a part of the G. Stone family since 1990, first as our Service Manager and in more recent years as an integral part of our Sales team. Every Spring Fred heads South. Not as far South as many Vermonters - the drive is just over an hour from our dealership - to his family's sugarhouse in Belmont, VT.
Growing up Fred remembers collecting buckets of sap with his grandfather and dumping them into 5-gallon pails on a sled to bring back to the sugar house. Today, technology has made the process more efficient with reverse osmosis, tubing, and vacuum pumps, but for him it is still a family affair. Fred and his wife Mary, along with their son Mike, and daughter in law Melanie all have full time jobs so the technology allows them to produce more syrup in the small window of time that they can devote to their hobby.
Having three generations of McAtee's all working together to carry on this tradition is really special. For the kids, having their Pop Pop drive them around on the tractor is almost as sweet as the syrup itself.
They tap about 285 trees and do sell some of the syrup, but it is not the money that motivates them to spend long nights and weekends in the sugarhouse. "My favorite part is just being with my family and seeing them grow up liking things that I grew up doing."
