Local landmark in Belmont, NH. The 1800's farmhouse and 1900's barn provided a chance for the family to grow according to a quiet country lifestyle.

In the summer of 1972, Jim & Kathy Keegal relocated their young family from NJ to NH, finally setting down roots in the town of Belmont, NH, and thus establishing

oots in the town of Belmont, NH on a small slice of land occupying 2 sides of Union Rd. Both Jim & Kathy were teachers in the public sector and in the summer they were homesteaders, teaching not only their own kids but also neighborhood kids how to grow and fend for themselves.

Lamenting the end of summer by starting fall projects. Apologies to the deer and turkeys, but the barn-side field needed to be mowed. Day one of splitting wood. Trying something new…holzhausen…. Norwegian method of stacking wood in a circle. Circles or oval, does it matter? We shall see.

Though small, they were mighty this year. Herb garden is super happy, as are the pollinators visiting the plants and flowers. The volunteer tomatoes are cranking out tomatoes, although little ones! (They do make for a tasty sauce though.).
On a whim, store bought potatoes were planted in their own bin and actually produced some potatoes, and lots of earth worms. Weeds from the bins will go to the compost pile for decomposition, and hopefully more earthworms.
Not a lot of production, but a good start. Buggers, it is dry despite the rain.

Belmont peeps and friends of the White Silo Farm...a PSA for you...The Belmont Board of Selectmen will hold a Public Hearing on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Tioga Meeting Room in the Belmont Mill pursuant to NH RSA 79-D, to accept comments and discuss the Discretionary Preservation (Barn)
Easement Application of Joyce Keegal Trustee for the White Silo 2025 Revocable Trust, 463 Union Road, Tax Map 116, Lot 022.

The barn is in need of some serious repair and hopefully this easement will allow us to financially move forward with the repairs. If you are available, your support would be greatly appreciated.

A little field mowing with the dad’s old tractor. It is not one of those “get on and go” tractors….it takes thought, planning and patience. Definitely a thinking person’s tractor, but got the job done. Left some tall grass for the critters to hang out in - namely the turkeys, deer and monarch caterpillars.

A bit warm today, thank goodness for the shady walking trails at the WSF.
When I (Joyce) am not at the WSF, I can be found at the library in Brentwood where I work as a library assistant and cataloger. (Yeah, that mindset explains a lot!). This past week this adorable book (recommended by an amazing teacher at Swasey Central School) came across my desk. It got me thinking about some of the “logs” here at the WSF and I just had to share some pictures of said logs. Click on the pictures for descriptions.
I don’t own this book yet, but it is on the list of books to have at the WSF. Who knows, maybe I will start a Farm library for friends and neighbors to enjoy. More on that later.

Yes, we are hardy folk, BUT please note we were frozen until May; then you skipped Spring and went straight into August! We would appreciate some June & July weather to acclimate. Thank you.”
OMG, no kidding! As mom would say, “ Feels like Jersey shore weather.” Ick.

New pictures from around the WSF. Absolutely no house or paperwork getting done now that the sun is back. Nothing but the purr of the chainsaw clearing downed trees along the trails.
Nice rays of sunshine, sure hope it means mom and dad like what is happening.

Been a minute since the last post, so photo dump time. Pictures are from around Earth Day…dad would be thrilled that the roadway around the Farm is staying clean. Mom’s gardens are getting a little love. Most of the little flowers are done and daffodils are finishing up too. Bring on the peonies and other plants. No complaints about the much needed rain, though dad would be grumbling.

At one time - as a homestead - the White Silo Farm had a number of gardens. Dad’s vegetable gardens were huge, numerous and fed the family. Mom’s flower gardens were just as plentiful and provided splashes of color, multitudes of bouquets, and attracted many pollinators. Sadly, those gardens are mostly gone, but not forgotten. Enter the next generation.

Starting small, sorting it out as we go, the hope is to bring gardens back to the White Silo Farm. High on the list are culinary (and medicinal?) herbs with flowers a close second and some veggies rounding out the list. Not sure if all that will be for us to enjoy or for the critters to enjoy, but worth a try.

The farm life instilled a sense of giving back and to that end, here is a question or two for the Belmont community…how can the White Silo Farm contribute to the community as a gardening entity? Would you like to see a plant/seed swap? Are you interested in developing pollinator gardens? How about a book group centered around gardens and/or cooking? Would a themed lending library be of interest? Would you like to see workshops and/or speakers? How about setting up a network of like-minded folks to bounce ideas off? Looking for a farm photography venue? (
