Please excuse the baby talk. I was very excited! This was a fun project, like building a fairy garden but putting actual fairies in it! They’ve been in my basement for two weeks and are so happy to be out in the sunshine and grass.

Well, after a brief hiatus and much deliberation I’ve settled on a chicken breed.

My best advice? Don’t start too big or small but complex!

These are Lavender Orpingtons. In the past my orpingtons were some of my favorites! They’re docile, and calm. The roosters do what roosters should (protect) without attacking the humans. They’re a good all-round breed that lays pretty well and they dress out at a good weight. Their eggs are sought out for hatching due to their unique plumage color. They even make great mothers so I’m hoping to have them do the heavy lifting next round!

I’m super excited to see them mature!

Sorry it’s been so long! I haven’t done any rare plant work, meat prepping, money saving tactics, homesteading, furniture flipping or posting for many reasons.

First my 5 year old was sick, then my 5 month old. I of course am sick too and even lost my voice for 3 days!

So here’s a super quick update-

I realized that I don’t have the bandwidth to have chickens. Especially not a breeding program consisting of 5 coops and 25 chickens!
I’ve been selling them and the coops and supplies off. And with the last group leaving this evening I breathe a sigh of relief.
I still plan on homesteading- learning to can, grow and more just not with livestock. I don’t find that part fun or practical anymore, and that’s ok.

Human children are no different than those of lions, gorillas, or dogs. They love to roll around on Mom. After a day at daycare, that’s all this guy wants to do.

This week I’m taking my household 3-4 steps back in order to save big! 💰

First- I fell into the magic that is MeatDad. He takes you through ways to save money on meat primarily. Then I took his information and put together a plan of action!

My preferred local store is Hy-vee. The butcher there will order anything I need if they don’t have what I need in stock.

I picked up a biiiiiig pork loin and a whole top round. 🤤. Both are super easy to break down.

I cut the pork in half. I kept one half for the crock pot and some pulled pork sandwiches! I wanted this piece to be large because we love the leftovers in tacos!

The other half I sliced into 12 Iowa chops but you could slice them thinner and get 20ish regular chops. We like the Iowa chops because I feel they don’t dry out so easily and can be butterflied if your recipe calls for it.

My favorite part of the whole thing other than the savings is freezing in portions perfect for my family’s needs. A 4 pack of thick-cut loins with a side of veggies will feed my family of 5 (2 adults, 2 kids, and a newborn) without leftovers. It’s perfect for us!

I use freezer paper and freezer tape to wrap them. I wrap them flat rather than stacked because they thaw faster. I label them with a sharpie the date, how many and what cut it is.

Now the cost breakdown 🧮:

The whole loin was $21.10 for about 8.48lbs.

If I had bought this pre-sliced it would have cost me $.45 per oz for the chops which comes out to about $30.53 for 4.24lbs of chops.

The 4.24lbs I left as a half top loin would have cost $22.85.

Savings: $32.28 overall.

I just made over $30 for 20 minutes of my time! 🤑

Disclaimer: I accidentally cut the dark meat into chops… it would have been better in pulled pork and the white meat would have made better chops. 😬

Check back in because I have a couple top round roasts in the oven for roast beef lunch meat. 😋

The biggest challenge for me in DIY is exercising patience. I thought I could get away with applying stain without wearing gloves. I now have purple fingers and extra freckles. 🫠
I never mind getting dirty, but I’m also a healthcare worker and last time I checked purple fingers were frowned upon. 🥴

This XL jewelry armoire took about 5 hours total to complete.
The design process took a lot more time as I tried to choose colors that complemented the pink velvet.
The original hardware was a combination of burnished copper and cheap gold paint… so I took the time to refinish all the hardware with a metalic wax.
While chalk paint doesn’t need more than a wax top coat, the wax needs to be re-applied every few years and doesn’t hold up to heat i.e.- don’t put items that are wax finished by Southern windows! All this to say, I always put a clear satin or flat finish over my project pieces so the paint is protected longer.

What do you think?
I love the dark blue grey against the pink!!!

🖤I bet you thought chicks were always cute? Well, they go through this awkward teenage phase just like the rest of us.

🖤These are 5 week old Ayam Cemani chicks and are the first breeding flock we are preparing. *please excuse the photographs, they’re tough to photograph at this age!

🖤The Ayam Cemani is not a bantam but is relatively small with roosters being about 5lbs and hens being about 4lbs.

🖤Luckily this bird is not prone to broodiness because it only lays an average of 60-100 matte cream-colored eggs per year, but eggs aren’t what this breed is typically kept for.

🖤A good bird is black on black on black due to hyperpigmentation (fibromelanistic gene). They will have black legs and feet, feathers, combs, skin, and even meat. White on the feathers or plum on the comb or wattles are considered undesirable.

🩶Breeding this bird with a breed of another color will often result in a bird with black or grey wattles and legs but colorful plumage.

🖤Though it is not a large bird it is thought of in some circles (Traditional Chinese Medicine) to be a health supplement when a broth is made from the carcas and in other circles a delicacy when roasted.

It’s hatch day!

This batch will include Wheaten Marans, Blue/Black/Splash Marans, Wheaten Ameraucana’s and Blue/Black/Splash Ameraucana’s.

Many of these will go into the new breeder pens, but some will be up for discussion this weekend. PM for details.
