Our second Spring/Summer garden is coming along. No herbicides or pesticides. We use intercropping with living pathways. Here we have sweet corn, romaine lettuce, cucumbers, green beans, flowers, squash, watermelon, and herbs! It’s a lot of work, but worth it to ensure a more nutritious and tastier crop.

I found this little guy in a hole he made next to the garden. Anybody know what it is? He looked like he was hunting grasshoppers so I left him alone. It’s nice to have a few extra hands to help with pest control.

Congratulations to the new mama! She hatched 9 chicks this week and is doing a great job taking care of them. The babies are different breeds from different hens, but she doesn’t care. She’s so proud!

Our little kitchen garden is coming along! We use intercropping so that we don’t have to use chemical fertilizers or pesticides here in Texas. This is a technique known as “Milpa.” The beans feed nitrogen to the corn, Swiss chard, collard greens strawberries, cauliflower, and romaine. The corn will eventually provide shade in the Texas heat, and the cucumber vines will provide ground cover to keep the soil cool. Flowers and dill attract predators that eat garden pests. We use the same technique in our Spring and Summer market garden.
