Butte View Ranch - Roger & Matt Glynn

Butte View Ranch - Roger & Matt Glynn We are the 3rd and 4th generation operating our cow/calf ranch on the edge of the beautiful South Da

We run approximately Black Angus 400 cows that are bred to top Hereford bulls, resulting in a very appealing black/baldie calf. Calving begins the last week of March, with the majority of calves born in April and early May. We market the calves in November at Valentine Livestock Auction - steers typically weigh around 680 #, with the heifers weighing #650.

Matt took a "few" pictures yesterday, October 29, 2025! Calves will be in Valentine on Thursday, November 6 this year. At least 90% of them were born in April/early May. Call Roger at 605-441-5418 or Matt at 605-319-0482, or Greg or Brogan at VLA if you have any questions about them.

Everyone will sleep well tonight! Probably the most stressful week of the entire year is finished. Calves are sold, and what a relief. Every steer on the place was sold, with an average of 599 #, which isn't what it usually is for us, but since we sold earlier than usual this year, and such terribly dry grass all summer, we are happy. Shipping to the barn two days before selling this year didn't work out as well as it has in the past. The calves looked good and full, but didn't gain their shrink back like they did last time. So that cost us some $ this year. But, again, as awful as the weather was for grazing cattle this year, it was better than last year, and we're hopeful next year will be even better and maybe get back to something more normal. Now, just a few more nights of replacements lulling us to sleep at night... and start planning for the next calf crop!

And they're gone! Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful fall day to ship calves! Cows are pregged, so hopefully Roger can get some sleep tonight. Every steer calf on the place left today. After an 80 mile trip to Valentine, one pot load weighed 626 # and the other weighed 617 #. One pot load of heifer calves weighed 591 #. We're happy with those weights, and anxious to see how the drafts weigh out after they're sorted. Mostly April born calves, with no creep feed, and extreme drought conditions this summer and fall (despite what the $ #@% drought monitor says!). It's always a good day when things go smoothly, and you have The. Best. Help. in the whole country!

Busy week, getting ready for our once-a-year pay check! Calves are heading to the Valentine salebarn Tuesday, for the sale on Thursday. There will be 150 steer and 90 heifer calves, out of Van Newkirk and Logterman bulls. Our cow herd is down by nearly 30% due to the extreme drought we've had the past two years. But these mamas do their job, and raise exceptional calves, even in tough conditions. We were told that a buyer bought ours and two other loads last year, all on the same day. They were fed the exact same rations in the feedlot, with the goal of getting to 1,000 pounds. By the time the other two loads hit 1,000 pounds, ours weighed in at 1,150 pounds. He was pretty happy!

The U.S. is the world’s second largest beef importer. Each year about 2 million cattle and 3 billion pounds of beef are imported from about 20 countries.

When beef is not properly origin labeled, American ranchers and farmers cannot compete against foreign beef from such countries as Brazil, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Mexico especially when that foreign beef bears a “Product of USA” label.
