Today we are at the Native American Food Fair on Capitol Hill getting to display KC’s best wild rice and our new website Nawapo.com.

The event is hosted by the Native Farm Bill Coalition and will feature food from across native America, including our sister company, Red Lake Nation Foods!

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that celebrates the victory of the Mexican Army over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 (it is not mexican independence day). Despite being outnumbered, the Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza managed to successfully defend the city of Puebla against the French army.

While Cinco de Mayo is primarily observed in Mexico, it has also become a popular celebration in the United States as a way to recognize and honor Mexican culture and heritage. If you choose to celebrate, look up an authentic recipe and know that Mexican heritage is vast and more than margaritas and sombreros. Even though Cinco de Mayo is not a national holiday in the US, it is still a great opportunity to have fun and show appreciation for Mexican-American culture and contributions.

Today, we celebrate the beauty and importance of our planet, and reflect on the ways we can protect and preserve it for future generations. We get our wild rice from local farmers who cultivate with the earth in mind, staying up on natural fertilizers, ethical crop practices and we are even working on packaging that is better for the earth.

Black History is essential to our everyday lives, but its good to have a month to really recognize all the contributions the Black community has brought. Wrapping up this month, we're showing appreciation for Booker T. Whatley.

Booker T. Whatley was a horticulturalist and professor at Tuskegee University. In 1987 he wrote and published, "How to make $100,000 farming 25 acres." His book shared smart and sustainable ways that farmers can use to minimize cost and waste while maximizing income and farm space.

He also introduced the idea of community supported agriculture where local consumers could pay to receive or pick their own fresh produce directly from local farms, saving both labor and time for farmers.

We hope you learned something alongside us this month and continue to celebrate Black contributions all year long!

Continuing our celebration of Black History Month by sharing how Booker T. Washington contributed to the agricultural world.

Booker T. Washington work to promote Black education and equal opportunity opened the door for generations of Black inventors, scientists and entrepreneurs. Education is essential in agriculture as we learn how to keep the earth healthy for generations to come!
