BFT Ranch

BFT Ranch We are a NE Texas ranch producing pastured, AGA certified grass fed red angus cattle. We are a family owned and operated multi use ranch in NE Texas.

Our main focus are the fabulous Red Angus cattle we raise. We have both Commercial and Registered animals (commercial meaning raised for beef and registered for producing show cattle, 4-H projects and continual breed improvement) They are born, raised and live as part of our family on our natural pastures. We also spend time with our pastured chickens (meat and egg layers), goats (milk) and a few

other random barnyard animals. Our goals and future projects include: furthering relationships for local distribution and remaining responsible stewards of the land and animals under our care, sharing knowledge about our practices and forgotten homesteading lifestyle.

It’s been a minute! (Southern speak for: I haven’t posted in quite a while😉).
All is well here at the ranch. Calves being born, herds being rotated through pastures, steers getting fat and being processed. And now, Spring is knocking. (Don’t get too excited, the bois d’arc trees havent budded yet). But planting season has arrived, fruit trees, native grasses and management of all the above is keeping me moving!

This calf was born last night at dusk. I found the pair this morning on the leeward side of a giant pecan tree. Looks good. I worried all night, but did not want to intervene. And this morning, a quick pass through the pasture, a little cotton seed for energy boost and I’m outta there. The more I drive around, the more the cattle move with me; disturbed from a warm place, a good bite of hay or just hunkered down conserving body warmth. Good genetics, pre-loading hay and improved winter planting/grazing all add up to confidence in getting the herd through short rough patches like today!

Rotational grazing. When the plains were wide-open and there were no fences or humans to interact with; the buffalo did it according to their seasons and the amount of grass and water available. Humans came along and guided animals into ranges. We practice rotational grazing on a smaller scale and try to follow more natural events. But I often think how humans have affected (positive and negative)
animals lives and none so apparent to me that this little guy this morning when I said it was time to change pastures. Doesn’t he just look mad, that I am disturbing him from his comfortable dry bedding?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 get along little doggie it’s time to move!
