Today’s Houlton Community Market started slow. It was the first market of the year, unseasonably cold, and in a different location. We prepared ourselves for a disappointing day.
Then familiar faces started showing up. Some brought friends. The market got busy, and the time went by fast. It’s our 4th year at the Market, and the other vendors and regular customers feel like family now.
We had multiple chicken customers today and talked to many of them about what makes our chickens a bit different. Most notably it’s the space, they are raised on our pasture, with room to roam. A few strands of electric wire define their space, but it’s only to keep the other animals out of their grain. We move their shelter twice a day to the grass fresh and their manure spread out.
Farming can be exhausting, especially during the spring . We’ve had multiple days this month that have started before 6am, where the first time we sit down is for dinner after 8pm and still need to make one last trip to the barn after.
Days like today, and our love for the work, give us the energy to keep at it. Thank you to all who came to the Market, and to those who shop at the Farm. Without you, small Farms like ours wouldn’t exist.
