Week 3: Why we raise chickens in the woods

Improve Soil Health

As chickens roam they:

Scratch and turn over leaf litter (natural composting)

Add manure that enriches the soil

This all helps build healthier forest floor ecosystems over time

This area is getting a well-deserved break. The chickens have been moved to a spacious new section where they can roam freely, scratch, and peck to their hearts’ content until it’s time to move again.

Thicker shells

Letting our 3-year-old help incubate chicken eggs was adorable and nerve-wracking all at the same time. But seeing his excitement and joy made it completely worth it! Even if it meant the risk of losing an egg.

Week 1: Why we raise chickens in the woods

Chickens naturally love scratching through leaves, hunting bugs, and dust bathing.

A wooded environment gives them:

Constant stimulation (less boredom = less pecking issues)

Shade and protection from heat, wind, and harsh sun

Cover from aerial predators (hawks are less likely to swoop in dense woods)

A more natural lifestyle overall

Why don’t our farm fresh eggs peel easily?

Well the simple answer is because they’re that fresh!

While store-bought eggs are usually older by the time you buy them (they can be a couple weeks old) so they peel easier.

In freshly laid eggs, the egg white sticks tightly to the inner shell membrane making them harder to peel. As eggs age, the shell separates from the white which makes them easier to peel when hard boiled.

Age your eggs! Let them sit for about 7-10 days and then boil them for easier peeling.

We wanted to take a minute to introduce ourselves — Bill and Katie — the people behind the farmstand.

Katie was born and raised right here in Southwest Michigan, while Bill is originally from Southwest New Jersey. Katie is a stay at home mom with a background in interior design, and Bill is in real estate and construction.

About six years ago we bought this property, which had been abandoned for quite a while. It came with a lot of history — and a lot of work. We never intended to live on the property but life has a funny way of working out. Three and a half years ago we moved into the farmhouse after a full rehab. What started as a simple idea quickly turned into a bit of a farm adventure. Bill brought home some barn cats… which somehow turned into chickens… then pigs… then goats… and eventually a livestock guardian dog to keep everyone safe.

Neither of us come from a farming background — we’re truly learning as we go. Restoring the property and bringing it back to life has been a labor of love, and we’re proud of how far it’s come.

We also have two kids, and every dollar from the farmstand goes into a savings account for their future — whether that’s college or trade school one day.

We have a lot of dreams for this place and hope you’ll continue to follow along as we slowly but surely transform the property.

So truly, thank you for supporting our little farmstand and hobby farm. We’re really glad you’re here.
