Guess it is a good thing ive been incubating so many chicken eggs. It has been confirmed that we have 1, if not multiple, hens eating the eggs. So this fall every single adult hen we currently have will be culled and we will have their offspring for next year's eggs. I suspected we had hens eating eggs as well as a predator coming up occasionally because not all the eggs were disappearing every day. I absolutely hate egg eaters.

Also lost a bunch of kits today. 1 of my mommas has decided that she is going to go from fabulous to sh*tty. We lost 1 of hers yesterday and it looked as if they werent eating. Either she isnt producing or she plain isnt feeding. I decided to split Ginnys babies and hers between them last night and give ginny the smaller and underfed babies. Welp, Lilly the fabulous to sh*tty mom trampled several of the babies. Needless to say she went in with the buck for a new breeding and ginny is getting all the remaining babies. At this point i dont expect most of them to live. Depending on how lilly does this next time she may be retired earlier than planned.

Meanwhile miss Mirabell is doing great her second time. Her babies were nice and chunky today. Of course I forgot to get their pic today to show the chunkiness but I did get a pic of them yesterday 😆 Definitely have 1 tri in the group but im not sure on some of the others at this time. Cant wait to see how they grow.

Took a break from incubating for a few weeks. Yesterday I decided to fire them back up since the current batch of birds will be moving outside soon. 80 chicken eggs and around 50 with guinea and welsh combined. At the rate im going we will have more than enough hens to replace the current hens next spring as well as plenty of roosters for the freezer. Woohoo!

Theyre finally here!! Ginny and Mirabell both kindled a day late but that is alright with me. Mirabell did not do so well with her first litter. She nested a full week early and then kindled on the wire and ate them. This time she had them in the box and so far hasn't ate any. It would seem putting her next to an experienced doe has helped to some extent as she now has 7 beautiful babies with Dandy as the daddy.
Ginny out did herself again. She popped out 11 little beans. Geesh! Her last litter was between 11 and 13 😯. I had to rescue 1 that was cold and on the wire but it should be alright since it doesn't seem to have been there too long. Im expecting a full litter of reds since Toast is the daddy but it would be fun to find something else in the mix 😆

The best part of colony raising?? Seeing all the happy rabbits living out some of their best days.

The best part of colony raising?? Seeing all the happy rabbits living out some of their best days.

Yesterday I finally got the doe colony redone. Previously the rabbits were allowed to burrow and it caused a lot of problems once the younger generation went in. Those guys started burrowing under the walking areas and now 1 has already collapsed. I kept the number of does in there to an absolute minimum for a while. Well now ive got fencing down so they can satisfy their need to dig but not burrow. In the evening I moved 14 grow out does and 1 adult to the pen. They were quite happy to have the space to run around. Ill continue to add new and better shelters over time but im going to say that the colony is officially done after 3 or 4 years of revamping it constantly. Now to get the bucks completely into cages and decide what to do with the remaining fencing. Should I do another doe colony or should I use it for something else? Have roughly 106 feet of fencing (3 of the 12ft and 7 of the 10ft minimum). What do you think?

Here are Lilly and Leo's babies. Looks like the official count is 6. I really thought she would have had more with being bigger but it looks like she will just always look big when she is pregnant. These guys are small too. At least I know she takes good care of her babies every time. Her neighbor (Mirabell) is due tomorrow so im fully expecting to have to foster some or all of those. Her first litter she nested a week early and then proceeded to birth on the wire and eat them 🙄. Hopefully having a good momma next to her will encourage her to do better this round.

Lilly kindled a day early. Kits were still wet but I counted 6. Ill give her some time before I do another count. This is our first successful litter for Leo so I am excited to see what we got. We lost the last doe he had been able to breed with before she was able to kindle. Super glad he finally has his own babies on the ground.

Now I have another issue. I noticed about 2 days ago that a caged doe had developed ear mites. She has been in a cage for the last 2 months almost, minimum.. This morning I noticed 4 others, at least, have also developed ear mites and again these are all rabbits thay have been caged for a while now. The only change was the hay. Can rabbits get ear mites from their hay? If so can I still feed it to them and just retreat as needed? Several are mommas, a bunch are due in the coming weeks, and 1 even just kindled this morning. No babies have it that ive noticed but would the babies need to be treated alongside momma and at what age can they safely be treated? Ive been using this stuff for the nest boxes as well since we donr have straw at the moment. 😞 We still have 4-6 bales of this stuff. To top it off i have no clue where it came from to ensure I dont buy from them again. This hay was bought from someone that had recently gotten out of goats and didnt need it anymore.

Such precious little babies and O M G that tongue!!! 😍😍 It is so frigging adorable that I just wanna squish all that cuteness. My son talks about cuteness aggression all the time and I will wholeheartedly agree that it DOES exist! Future mousers in the making right here.
