The wearisome reality of increasingly erratic weather patterns. High winds, sudden rains. Somewhere not far, a tornado touched down.

The road to the vineyard was apocalyptic. Old trees, felled like toothpicks.

One side of the fence looks like something from myth took a bite out of its side. The other is crushed at multiple panels like a compound fracture.

There’s a silver lining. Most of the fells are so dense, deer can’t pass through.

This is Mid-Atlantic farming in a changing climate. This old fence wasn’t built for these winds. These old trees weren’t planted with tornado conditions in mind.

We adapt as much as we can. Trying to match pace with a rapidly devolving celestial body as it becomes another, less familiar earth.

Green fruit. Young berries pepper the vineyard.

Slimmer in number than what could have been before the frost, but still there, still ours.

This year feels the most real the vineyard has shown us. No longer strangers to this plot of earth, we carry each other through weather fair and fickle.

Just us and the vines and the wide open sky. Full of possibility.

Oxidation. Seldom the target. Now the goal.

We began our oxidative muscadine project last year. This year, we built a “carboy garden” in the style of small-scale Southern French rancio producers.

The goal is to allow heat and time to transform this aromatic native into something entirely new and unknown.

Creativity takes time. Time takes patience. Patience is the true human art.

Bloom. Squint, and you’ll see tiny grape blossoms, just beginning to open.

The early frost damage is a distant memory, now. The vines are verdant with new leaves, shoots reaching skyward, so very much alive.

We can learn a lot from the vines. Even when life knocks us back to where we started, there’s always an opportunity to recover.

And maybe, just maybe, to thrive.

Recovery. What shoots survived the hard frost just weeks ago are verdant and full. Secondary buds are tentatively unfurling in this burst of sunny May heat.

Delayed but not destroyed. The vineyard continues, tenacious and persistent, sending its young green shoots skyward.

It’s bottling season. The winery is all glass and caps and buzzing motors. And music. Very, very good music.

Some things are best kept small. Our Chamomile aperitif is one such thing.

Bottled at 375 mL, it’s just big enough to fit into the palm of your hand. A tender gift meant to bring warmth and softness in a harsh and aching world.

The next vintage drops in a few weeks. Stay tuned.

Until this moment, we had been holding our fingers crossed. We knew the late freeze went hard. We saw the damage done to other vineyards.

Our vineyard has always been spared of frost. Nature seemed to forget about us, and somehow our vines always made it through the chaos of spring untouched.

This vintage was supposed to be our first real harvest. We lost 95% of our young buds and shoots. Nature didn’t forget about us this time.

After years of fighting hungry deer breaking through a decrepit fence, of mowing grass late into night, of arguing with an old and dilapidated tractor, of negotiating and renegotiating expectations with the landowner, this feels like something undeserved.

But nothing is undeserved in nature. Nothing is deserved, either. Life unfolds. Sometimes there is frost. We do our best, and remind ourselves that we are small, and continue forward anyway.
