Part of prepping the BUF for winter involves reshaping beds, sowing cover crops, and spreading some straw to enhance germination and early growth by holding in moisture and making it harder for birds to eat the seed. This picture shows beds at three stages of this process. As of today there were still some packets of cover crop mix at the Berea and Richmond libraries, but I don't expect them to last long.

Back by popular demand, the BUF end-of-season pepper giveaway. We gave away a lot of peppers yesterday, so this morning we harvested all remaining peppers and put them on the sidewalk table at the BUF (201 Adams). Come by and help yourself. Our way of thanking you for being a friend of the BUF. This will probably be the last day for the giveaway.

This is a good chance to freeze some peppers so you can think of the BUF in January as you thaw and add them to your soups and stir fries,

With the arrival of fall, we are starting to put the BUF beds into cover crops -- Austrian winter pea, oat, turnip, crimson clover -- to protect and feed the soil. This is an investment in soil health and crop yield. The BUF/Madison County Conservation District cover crop seed giveaway continues for one more week. Pick up your bags of seed at the Berea and Richmond libraries or stop by the BUF. We have distributed more than 500 bags of seed mix so far.

Sept 22, the beginning of fall, and some of the BUF apple trees are blooming. Stressed by heat or drought, trees can go dormant, and when conditions improve it seems like spring. It is suggested to pick off the blossoms so the tree doesn't waste energy.

It's Pepper Palooza at the Berea Urban Farm. We had a great pepper crop so are making them available to all friends of the BUF. Bell peppers, banana peppers and jalapenos. You will find the peppers in the electric cooler on the BUF sales table at 201 Adams Street. Peppers are easy to freeze because they do not need to be blanched or cooked before freezing. Just wash, dry, remove stem and seeds, then slice (or leave whole), bag, put in freezer.

The smell of New Mexico came to Berea yesterday as we roasted Hatch chiles on the BUF. Mr. Chile himself -- Al White -- was there along with various Bereans and even three women from Lexington. The Hatch NM chile crop is down 50% this year due to damage from leaf miners and a shortage of irrigation water, so we may have to boost our BUF plantings next year. Of course, Al will say that only chiles grown in Hatch NM are real Hatch chiles, but our BUF chiles are not too shabby.

Awards for the Amann Sowell Photography Contest were given out yesterday on the BUF. Julie Sowell presented certificates and cash awards to the winners including Peggy Yaeger, first prize (Backlit Chard leaf) and Rachael White, second prize (Bee approaching sunflower). Jimmy Marcum of Madison County Conservation District took cover crop seed bags to the Berea and Richmond libraries today, so you can pick up a book and seed in one trip. One bag plants 50 ft2. Feed and protect your garden soil during the winter. You can also pick up seed at the Berea Urban Farm.
