During the two weeks before a full Moon, (so, right now!) seeds absorb more water. That's the theory behind Planting by the Moon, anyway! Plant your above-ground crops and annual flowers this week to see if it makes a difference 🌱🌓

Here's the science behind the theory: Moisture is increasingly drawn to the soil's surface during the period when the Moon is waxing, causing seeds to swell, promoting stronger germination and better-established plants.

Throughout history, people have planted according to the Moon’s phases—from the Ancient Egyptians to the Romans. Pliny the Elder, a Roman historian, wrote about the Moon’s influence on agriculture. Even in completely different regions like China and Africa, the Moon’s cycles were considered in planting practices 🌕️🌾

Spring is near!

Old timers did not wait on weather apps. Farmers watched the trees, the blooms, and the bees. Nature has been running the planting calendar a whole lot longer than we have.

Here is the old school way to know it is time.

1️⃣ Daffodils bloom
Plant peas, spinach, and lettuce. Soil around 40 to 45 degrees.

2️⃣ Forsythia turns bright yellow
Plant potatoes and onion sets. Ground is workable.

3️⃣ Red maples bloom
Direct sow carrots, beets, and chard.

4️⃣ Oak leaves the size of a squirrel’s ear
Plant sweet corn. Soil near 55 degrees.

5️⃣ Lilacs bloom
Transplant cabbage and broccoli.

6️⃣ Apple trees blossom
Plant bush beans and cucumbers once frost risk drops.

7️⃣ Dogwoods bloom
Set tomatoes with protection or wait for warmer nights.

8️⃣ Dandelions cover the yard
Plant squash and pumpkins after frost danger passes.

9️⃣ Iris bloom
Time for peppers and eggplant if soil is warm.

🔟 Blackberries leaf out
Plant okra and melons. The true heat lovers.
