This was the part of the herd on the south end of the ranch after they just got done playing this evening.

When the herd gets running on these wild, chilly evenings, you might notice them looking like they’re literally smoking! No, they aren't on fire that’s just the power of their massive "internal engines" at work. 🚂

What’s actually happening?
The Steam Effect: Bison are incredibly well-insulated. Their thick woolly coats are so efficient that snow can sit on their backs without even melting! But when they start running, they generate massive amounts of body heat. When that hot air meets the frigid evening air, it condenses instantly into those "smoke" puffs you see.
Massive Lungs: Bison have the largest tracheas of any land mammal! This helps them pre-warm the air they breathe in, and when they exhale, it comes out as thick, billowy clouds of steam. Pretty cool huh? 🦬🙌🏻🤓
