Crop update….

TLDR….Thank God for frost fans!

We are thankful for the crop that we have. There is a lot of damage around the area from the multiple frost events this spring. Peaches, apples, and pears are growing and the size of the crop is starting to be known.

Nationwide, there are crop failures—Georgia peaches, New Jersey and Pennsylvania peaches and apples, apples in the Hudson River Valley in New York, peaches in Utah and Colorado. These are some examples that we know of based on news reports.

We will have fruit. Some varieties have a better crop than others in both peaches and apples. With the widespread supply issues, we are guessing that prices will become interesting. As always, we promise not to take advantage of our customers.

Overall, we are thankful and looking forward to a good season.

Scenes from the vineyard this morning. We ran frost fans starting at midnight. Low temperature was 29. It was plenty frosty on the ground and even up on a 5.5 foot trellis. Time will tell how we fared. Apples are starting to bloom, pears are past full bloom, and peaches are mostly done blooming.

Have faith!

Below freezing temps are predicted for tonight. We will run the frost fans, say prayers, and hope for the best.

“Pray like it all depends on God and work like it all depends on you.”

We would also appreciate prayers on behalf of all our fruit farming friends and partners. The cold stretches up to Grand Rapids and Hart/Shelby in Michigan. Washington state has been running frost fans this last week as well. And New Jersey and Pennsylvania are experiencing the cold as well. All areas are in vulnerable fruit development stages. The early warmth this spring has pushed things two weeks ahead of normal growth.

8 weeks of progress!

Since February 16, we went from footings to built, dry, and poured floors. Hats off to the group of contractors that are working on this building!

—When it was windy, Daniel the foreman from MilMar Post Buildings was here at all hours of the day worried about the trusses and walls to ensure that the building was safe. The crew from Milmar shoveled mud and snow off of the footings on day 1 so that we could get a jump start on this project and not fall behind!
—Ron and Rob Knuth from Knuth Excavating who have hauled, moved, and compacted every bit of dirt to ensure stability and drainage…even to the point of sitting here during a rain storm to make sure the rain was draining away and not eroding anything.
—Rod and Mat Sherwood from Sherwood Building & Excavating, Inc. and their team for getting the footings in last fall so we were ready when the winter thawed. These guys know what they’re doing and show up early in the morning to prep, get ready for a big pour, and stay until the mud is set with the proper finish. Rod left a dinner to come check on things during a rainstorm and make sure the next day’s pour was not altered or undermined!
—Phil and his sons from Vanderwerf Electric. Lots of conduit got installed and buried in this building to run coolers and the packing line. Pictured is the control panel that they are building for the packing operation.
—Mike Huspen at Fab-N-Weld in Berrien Springs for his expert crane operation to set 150+ trusses.
—Ian and his team from Ridge Builders in Sparta for the sheet metal installation. Metal roof starts tomorrow!

We are so thankful for these contractors and their expertise to get this project off to a fast start. 10 more weeks to go!

Today they set the final truss on our new packing facility. Very glad to have that part of the process done, especially with the winds we had yesterday.

In the meantime, we are still working on packing and selling the apples in the cold storage. We’re hoping to wrap up around Easter. Lots of good eating and cooking apples available, depending on your flavor or use—Honeycrisp, Evercrisp, Pink Lady, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Gala, Red Delicious, Jonagold, Jonathan, Cameo, and Ambrosia. Open M-F 8-4.

What’s on your menu for the game tonight? Apple nachos? Honeycrisp tend to not brown (oxidize) after you cut them. Or use a different variety and spray or dip them in some citrus water (lemon juice, orange juice, orange juice concentrate). The citric acid counteracts the oxidation process.
