We typically have pretty mild Virginia winters, so the topic of dressing for outdoor sports hasn’t been much of an issue until this year!!

If you were heading out to go skiing would you wear a pair of leggings and no gloves?

Winter sports can be fun, and it’s invigorating to be outside moving your body despite the weather, but you must be dressed for it!

A few tips for dressing for winter riding lessons:

1. Layers!! Fleece leggings and/or insulated riding pants are very effective! At the very least, layer leggings or long Johns under pants. Cuddle duds is a great brand!

2. Gloves! Thinner gloves for grip works best. Use hand warmers under gloves!

3. A neck warmer and winter jacket that is not too long will keep you toasty!

4. For your helmet, a fleece cover that fastens under your neck will cover your ears and provide additional warmth. Try Statelinetack.com

5. Finally, your feet will stay toasty with thick wool or ski type socks combined with hot hands type inserts for your toes. Insulated riding boots for winter are also helpful!

I know this is a lot of gear to put on, but trust me that the physical and mental health benefits of getting outside even on the coldest days will be more than worth it!!

Now, enjoy your ride and get some hot cocoa afterwards!!
