Yesterday 2/8/22 we discovered Oatman down in the barn and it took some effort to get him standing.
He was favoring his right rear hoof, but allowed Levi, the farrier to lift leg and trim hoof. He was off balance and did not do his other hoofs.
I got Oatman last August from a BLM sale in Virginia along with Mohave. They were progressing well, but with the weather we been having, training was suspended till spring.
I put a call into Dr Quodomine who came late afternoon. Oatman was still on his feet eating and drinking, so I was at a loss.
Dr Q heard clicking when he moved but he stood for examination and did not show sign of pain.
Dr Q, suspects a broken pelvis and helped me make a stall in the barn, which is generally an open space.
He now is on supplemental feed and bute, with the hope, over time, it will heal.
Prayers would be appreciated.
Years ago, after being in an accident with trailer, Henry had broken his pelvis and after a period of time, Dr Q recommended Henry be but down.
He was with the others and showed no issue until the day we made that hard choice.
Henry was such a special Jack and we adopted him at the same time as Honeybun.
They were our first donkeys back in 1995.
At this point, there is no reason to worry. Easier said than do, but I will follow the recommendations of Dr Q.
Best guess is he took a spill on ice.
For those not from the area, we been in single digits for a while. We had ice storm last weekend and on Monday we went above freezing and everything that melted froze over Monday night.
This place was a walking ice rink! Because of the temperatures, I have been feeding them in the barn. That area was dry and under cover.
