When two missions align ✌

Spotlighting our recent loan to , an residency program in New York state that since 2018 has created safe spaces for Black and ***r artists to spend time in , rest, and restore. Now, they're launching a working to and sustain artist residents.

Founder Kamra Abdul-Hakim founded Activation Residency in response to the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent social movement in 2020, which compelled them to think deeply about what a future looks like for Black and q***r people, as well as others living on the margins.

In 2022, Kamra successfully crowdsourced funding to purchase eight acres of land. Through mentorship and business development support through , , and , Kamra has developed a strong plan for a market garden, field kitchen, bar, grocer, spa, and farm stay - all run on passive and low-tech water and energy systems.

We're so proud to have supported Activation Residency this August with a 0% interest loan to kick start the food program, including quite literally paving the way with much-needed work to their driveway. Onwards!

wow … it is all happening—next week, founder heads Upstate to begin this season’s farm design. Budget is super tight and we won’t be able to do everything but our goal is to complete our whole site water design this season. Our lovely comrades made it easy for white and nonblack folks to redistribute funds to our respective land projects. This work takes all of us. 🐛🪱🐌🐞🌲🪹🪨

so, it happens—times changes and audiences disengage. most accounts following Activation Residency] jumped on the follow-Black-accounts-bandwagon back in 2020. We are 2 years out from our initial interest in land stewardship and pulled off funding a parcel that feels like home. The work of DIY entrepreneurship does not allow for folks to be online as much as is needed to stay relevant and top of mind. That being said, we are a 12.3K account getting 35-40 likes per post which is utterly abysmal. This transition to being able to provide more for the people we serve meant being offline, and we still make it a point to archive, share, and provide top-tier digital windows into the Activation Residency] experience.

We are transitioning into a forest farm able to host and soak. How do y’all feel about that? How can we more aptly gauge your interest in our new products? In this realm, engagement is love. We hope to see you on the farm in the near future.

“Hakim recently purchased eight acres of land, envisioning a forest farm able to host and soak. We made the half-hour drive to Hakim’s plot and cried tears of joy as we relished in the dream with him. Activation Residency and shocks of love built this residency experience for PaviElle French, a Minnesota-based musician centering healing. There, in the forest of Hakim’s land, we all stood, wooded and mossy ground giving slightly underfoot, listening to PaviElle belt an ancestral West African hymn of blessing to Hakim. Her voice swirled around us, into our slice of sky, vibrating rustling leaves of trees. Then came rain, watering seeds of vision and love inside of all of us.” -

at work in wellness, an x shocks of love] artist residency collaboration with an input over output approach, Elia diane Fushi Bekene (they/aile)] taught us about connection as a portal to healing disembodiment. when you feel your embodiment is fractured, what helps you reconnect? recently defined embodiment as knowing what is happening in/with/through your body — not what you think is happening — but what is actually happening, and we love that definition.
