Let’s talk Hydrangeas-
The biggest question I get asked is “why aren’t my hydrangeas blooming anymore?”
First thing I need to know- what type of hydrangea do you have?
Panicle Hydrangeas (limelight, little lime, etc) bloom off new season growth. You can trim them late fall, all the way up to early spring. Their blooms set on the new growth that starts in late spring.
Oakleaf & Big Leaf, Macrophylla Hydrangeas (wee bit giddy, bloomstruck, etc) bloom off OLD wood. The latest you can trim them is August (around here). The best time to trim is right after blooms are spent. Their blooms set this year, for next years enjoyment.
Remember- you don’t have to necessarily trim every variety. It helps put energy back into the plant.
