I don't really give these guys the credit they deserve. Day in and day out they proudly patrol the goat pens keeping any threat at bay... or, anything they perceive a threat which may include an unlucky opossum or even a skunk. They also protect a flock of turkeys that roost in the trees inside the pen at night. 🙄
Let me just brag on my boy, Boz, for a second. This guy is 110+ lbs of amazing dog! He'll be 2 in March. My LGDs don't have access to my chickens but they do have access to behind the coop and run to help protect them as well. I've never really worked with them on the chickens, but they know they mean something to us because we care for them so because we care, they care. They protect what is important to us! Today I was at my desk working and I heard Boz barking by the coop and not coming up. It was his alert bark (which does sound different from his predator deterrent bark) so I decided to go down and see what he was barking at thinking it was goat related. Harmoni was running up and down the hill like "hey, Mom, don't you hear him?? Come down here!"
When I got down there I noticed one of my young hens was dead. He was trying to tell me something was wrong AND he was keeping the other chickens off of her. He had tried to get to her digging around the pen (luckily the fence is buried because truthfully he probably would've unintentionally taken out my entire flock trying to protect the dead one) but he tried nonetheless. As soon as I went in and retrieved the hen and praised him he went on about his merry way.
When you have working dogs there's a mutual trust and you have to listen to them too! I bond with my dogs inside for months before we turn them out with the livestock. They protect our livestock because they love and trust us and therefore what we love they love and protect.
I'm just so proud of this guy! 🥰
