The math on retirement doesn't always add up the way you'd hope...
A million dollars sounds like security until you start running the numbers. Between mortgage payments, property taxes, insurance, and the steady drain of maintenance costs, housing alone can swallow half of a retiree's monthly income. It's the kind of reality that catches people off guard — they've saved aggressively for decades, hit their target number, and then discover that their home, the thing they've spent a lifetime building equity in, becomes the thing that constrains everything else.
For many, it forces an uncomfortable choice: downsize to a smaller property, relocate to a lower cost-of-living area, or accept that housing will dominate their budget in ways they didn't anticipate. The dream home that made sense at 45 can feel like an anchor at 70.
It's a reminder that building wealth and building a life are two different problems — and sometimes the home you love most is the one that costs you the most freedom.
