I am sure you have noticed increased activity with "bees".

Yellow jackets and honey bees are starting to make their plans for winter. They look and act very different and it is important to notice the difference.

Honey bees usually go about their own business unless you get in their way.
Honey bees look a little more gold, fuzzy and oval. They fly smoothly thru the air and are generally peaceful.

Yellow jackets are the ones that bother people and food, especially, this time of year.
Yellow Jackets are noticeably black and yellow, no fuzz and distinct body parts. They fly like they have a caffeine buzz and are generally jerks!

We dont want impostors to give our honey bees a bad rap!!

Dolly's music is often playing while our beekeepers work the beeyards, the honey house or when they relax.
Though we never met, she feels like a friend.
Peace be the Journey!

Dolly was the voice of a little mountain girl who came from almost nothing and never became ashamed of where she came from. She carried Appalachia in her accent, her stories, her humor and every song she ever wrote.

She showed the world that poverty could not erase dignity. That softness was not weakness. That a woman could be glamorous, brilliant, tenderhearted and powerful all at once. She never climbed so high that she forgot the people still living in the hollers below.

Through her music, her generosity and the millions of books she placed into the hands of children, Dolly gave more to these mountains than we could ever return. Some people become so woven into a place that it is impossible to imagine the landscape without them. Dolly was one of those people.

Rest easy, Dolly. You made us proud to come from the mountains. And we will always love you." 🕊️

A day in the life of beekeepers when they are not sitting under a tent and behind a table selling the beautifully bottled honey and beeswax candles.

Scott was taking care of our backyard hives today. It was over 80 degrees and the humidity was so thick you could touch it. He wore a full suit, on top of his clothes. Put on a thick veil to protect his head, face, eyes and ears. For the record, when you see him or Andy wearing gloves, you can be sure the bees are not happy to have them disturbing their homes.

He lifted heavy box after heavy box. Each one was moved and checked, several times, to make sure the bees were healthy and there was honey ready to take to the honey house.
Upon arrival to the honey house these same boxes, are pulled from the truck and hand carried inside. Once inside they are moved around, at least one more time, before we can extract honey and get it ready to put into containers for our customers.

Today he moved about 55 full boxes at about 50lbs each.
Quick math says that’s about 2700lbs.
Times at least 3 moves.
In round numbers, ...... give or take 4 tons.

They have been doing this general routine several times per week, most weeks, since June. I’ll leave the math there.

During any farm market, in any town you will hear someone ask the farmer or beekeeper why prices are so high.
“The plants grow themselves” or
“The bees do all the work” and
the very familiar…
“Must be nice to set your own hours.”

The hours are long and the physical pain is no joke.
Doing what you love seems make it worthwhile!

Yeah, bees produce the honey, but they sure don’t do all the work.

When you visit the market, take a moment to shake a farmer's or vendor's hand and thank them for the hard work they put into growing, raising, and creating the products we all enjoy. Your support truly does make a difference.

💃 From 8:30–9:00 AM, the Square Dance Association of Wisconsin will be stopping by for a special flash mob square dance! Dancers from throughout the state are in town for their convention at the Brookfield Sheraton Hotel and will be bringing some extra fun and entertainment to the market.

Fresh food, local businesses, live entertainment, and a great way to support your community—we'll see you tomorrow!
