The perfect soil temp for planting potatoes is right now- when the dandelions bloom. They still could potentially get hit with frost in late May so having cover ready is a good idea but usually the frost is over before they come up. Potatoes do fine in MN summers so there is no need to rush to plant. I usually plant 1/2 now and 1/2 in May.

Sadly we have a garlic failure situation this year. It puts me behind another year! I bought in fresh garlic seed last year to get rid of Asters Yellows disease. One of the two suppliers sent moldy, sprouted garlic. He’s a well know garlic grower so I went with it. I bought one other kind from a different farmer. Only that one is up. All the garlic from the Missouri guy has rotted. If I don’t get a refund I will be spreading bad publicity for him. Even if I get my money back it is way more of a loss considering what it would be worth this year. It’s very expensive to start off with a purchased garlic crop and this is the fourth or fifth time I have started over. So this year there will be one variety of garlic. It is Kettle River Giant, a softneck. I’ve been wanting to get it for years. I had 65 varieties last year and now just one.
