One of the key parts of homesteading for most is learning how to process animals. How to do it right, humanely, clean, and effectively - getting the most use out of every single part of the animal possible.

Today, expo ticket holders were invited to the farm to start learning how to process the beef we will be cutting up next weekend.

Things like:
The humane slaughter
Knowing how to judge the quality of your animal
Skinning (boy did we learn a bunch of really smart tips for that)
Gutting
And he’s still teaching!

I am so grateful to Graham Oakes for his incredible ability to honor the animal and teach well.

Now I’m excited to learn the rest next week! He’s gonna fire up a grill for samples, too!

If you’re thinking about processing any large livestock or wild game like pigs, cows, moose - you don’t want to miss this class.

The cow butchering/processing is only offered live, these will not be recorded this year.

Tickets can be found here: https://commongroundalaska.com/alaska-homestead-expo/

((Pic is preparation for slaughter - I’m sure any pix of the process will be hidden although it’s fascinating and it’s being done very clean.))

Okay folks, this is it! (spoiler at the end)

I'll be honest, I'm tired of "selling" the expo so I'm entering into "enjoying every single second, making this the very best expo ever for the attendees" mode.

If you want to come in person, we'd absolutely LOVE to have you! If you want to watch virtually, be sure to grab your ticket for that, too!

➡️ Remember, your both tickets include all of the weekend classes PLUS classes all summer long - PLUS all of the recordings. It's a steal of a deal.⬅️

(Spoiler here) And - here's the other thing: In January, when we were starting to plan the 2027 Expo I realized that I don't have any calling, no vision, and honestly, no ambition to do another one.

We tried to force it, we even had a meeting and the ideas were neat but in the end, I feel like we've accomplished everything we set out to accomplish and there's just not a need for another big event like this. The community that is being built through these events has taken a life of its own - in a very amazing way that is far greater than I ever dreamed.

God is calling us to something different.

This will be the final Alaska Homestead Expo.

So, my friends, if you want to be part of the very LAST Alaska Homestead Expo, be sure to grab your tickets. The teachers are incredible, so wise, so smart, and so helpful!

Everyone has worked incredibly hard on their presentations and the information is second to none.

And most of these teachers aren't teaching anywhere else. If you want to learn from them, this is the place to do it.

It's going to be an incredible weekend - you sure don't want to miss it.

A PEEK BEHIND THE SCENES: The teachers for the Alaska Homestead Expo have been incredible about putting their classes together - it has been so fun working with them - and I am BLOWN AWAY with what they know!

A good majority of the folks teaching classes at the expo are not professional teachers. They're just Alaskans determined to learn how to do their thing well and they're willing to share what they've learned along the way.

For instance:
🌾 Patrice has spent years foraging and playing with locally grown grains and will be teaching how to make a sourdough loaf with 100% local/foraged grains.
🍝 Wendy learned how to make pasta from her Italian ancestors - and is sharing her old world knowledge
🐛 Ellen got sick to death of fighting currant worms and she didn't give up until she found a solution!
🥕 Through trial and error, Jenny has learned tricks and tips for gardening that will help elevate your cultivation from marginal to extraordinary!

🌟 And this is just the tiniest glimpse, the list goes on and on and on. With over 85 classes PLUS all of the demonstrations, it's an incredible deal.

You aren't going to find most of these teaching on YouTube or on most podcasts because - well, it just isn't out there.

➡️ If you can't attend in person, that's okay! We have a totally online option. We realize and agree that in-person is always best but we also know that isn't always possible. I would hate to see anyone miss out on this just because they can't be there in-person. ⬅️

Also, every single ticket (virtual or in-person) includes all 65 summer zoom classes. Those are live - watch the class, ask questions, learn from local experts! PLUS replays for everything are all included.

MAJOR EXPO SHIFTS

They say “Necessity is the mother of invention” and I couldn’t agree more! We’ve flipped the script on the Expo and make it more affordable and accessible for everyone - PLUS we managed to keep the in-person side for folks who are able to still meet in Big Lake. However, we’ve also added a virtual option and it’s a doozy!

Here are the details:
The Expo is still taking place at the Big Lake Rec Center but instead of 4 days, we’ve condensed it to just three days. The final day (Sunday) will now be at the farm - Church and a potluck.

We also are not renting tents so we don’t have near as many classrooms as we originally planned. HOWEVER, this made us get creative and I think you’ll be happy with the solution!

We now will use the upstairs classroom as our primary classroom and everything that takes place in there will be live-streamed! So you can watch from home!

All remaining classes will be shared live via zoom all summer long on Monday and Thursday evenings and the first Saturday morning of every month.

So no one has to miss a thing! And all will be recorded so if you do happen to miss it, you can still catch up!

Plus, the marketplace just keeps getting better and better with more giveaways and demonstrations. Whether you have just a couple of hours or the whole day, you’re sure to have a great time and maybe win some cool stuff!

Grab your ticket (even virtual!) right here: https://commongroundalaska.com/alaska-homestead-expo/

We are so excited to announce that Lazy Mountain Pickers, an authentic dulcimer band, is going to open for Josh and Carolyn Thomas on Saturday, May 23, at the Alaska Homestead Expo.

Plus! They offered to do a demo and hands on class for the family program so the kids can even touch and maybe learn how to play a note or two on the dulcimer.

We have the neatest community. Thank you so much to the lazy mountain pickers for your generosity!

Here’s a little more about the group:

LAZY MOUNTAIN PICKERS is a mountain dulcimer music ensemble based in the Mat-Su Valley. The group gets together weekly in Palmer to play mountain dulcimer tunes, and they have performed at numerous venues across Palmer and Wasilla.

The mountain dulcimer (aka Appalachian Dulcimer) is one of only two musical instruments that originated in the United States, the other being the banjo. It is believed to have been born in the Appalachian Mountains, perhaps in the 1700’s. Early Appalachian musicians played in a drone style using a “noter,” or wood dowel, and often a turkey or goose quill rather than a guitar pick.

Contemporary players employ a variety of styles including fingerpicking, flatpicking, chord-melody, and strumming.

Dulcimer music genres range from traditional fiddle tunes to rock music and everything in between depending on the player’s interests.

The Lazy Mountain Pickers are excited to play a fun mix of instrumental and vocal tunes, traditional and more recent, at the Homestead Expo. They will also play songs for children and provide some instruction on the dulcimers during the family program. They’ll even pass out some turkey quills for a little traditional pickin’.

“Dulcimer” comes from a Latin word meaning “sweet melody,” and so it is! Come and hear for yourselves!

Ensemble members: Julie Feaster, Jerry Troshynski, Marjorie Bellringer, Rev. Leisa Carrick, Mabel Wimmer, Pat Chesbro, Tracy Verrall.

This isn't how I had planned to do this but Abbi pointed out just how cool it is to see all of these together so I thought I'd post all of these first, then we will break them down.

The photos below represent the variety of subjects you will learn about at the Alaska Homestead Expo.

But here's the crazy part - we have several classes that don't fit into these categories! Classes like:

🍝 Learning to make Pasta like an old-world Italian
🐶 Raising and training your Livestock Guardian Dog
🧼 The basics of soapmaking
⚡️ Living off-grid
🔥 Building a Rocket Mass Heater
Seriously, the list goes on and on ...

PLUS
⛪️ Sunday church service with a bluegrass worship band
🍦 An ice cream social
🧐 Roundtable discussions with knowledgable experts

Curious how the Alaska Homestead Expo got its start?

For those of you who don't know, we have a u-pick farm that is very busy in the summer. I like to say we have a six week party with the neatest people in Alaska during our short but sweet season.

Countless times I will have a conversation with a customer who will mention something about her goats or share how she was successful overwintering her bees or will ask our favorite ways to use black currants or any number of things.

Then later in the day, someone else will come in with a question about goats or will talk about their experience overwintering bees or will have a really really neat recipe using black currants.

And I spent the first few years on the farm thinking how cool it would be if we could connect these people. If we could just get them together in one place they would have a connection that would make our community stronger - and these amazing people could get to know one another and learn from each other.

And that is where the idea of the Expo came from. Side note: That's why we do the ice cream social, too. The ice cream social is done toward the end of the expo so folks who recognize each other from classes can connect.

Putting this thing on is fulfilling - but my greatest expo memories are overhearing conversations like:

"Hey, didn't I see you in the goat class? How many goats do you have?"

"I recognize you from the canning class. Did you happen to get that recipe for canning salmon with jalapenos?"

Or my favorite so far:

"Our kids are playing together really well - can we maybe plan a playdate?"

These are actual conversations I have overheard at the expo between folks who were strangers until Expo weekend.

Because we're not watching these classes on a screen, we're not isolated and trying to figure things out on our own.

Finally, we're finding community and we're getting to know our neighbors and fellow Alaskans, and we're learning how to do this homesteading life together.

And that makes it all worth it.

Connect with your people at this year's expo. Grab your tickets here: https://commongroundalaska.com/alaska-homestead-expo/

PS - we have put together some camping options for you so you can just come and spend the weekend! Sound perfect? I thought so, too. Reach out to me for camping info. 🙂
