Mike just finished a book that hit close to home — literally.
It's called The Crazies, by Amy Gamerman, and it's set right here in Big Timber, Montana, in the shadow of the Crazy Mountains we look at every single day. It's a story about land, legacy, and what it takes to make a living out here.
But what stuck with Mike wasn't just the setting — it was a bigger thought about the food we raise. Long before there were ranches or fence lines, bison sustained the First Nations and Native peoples of this land for centuries. It was food, and it was so much more than food.
When we raise grass-fed, grass-finished bison on this same ground, beneath these same mountains, Mike sees it as continuing one of the oldest food traditions on this continent — not something we invented, but something we've been entrusted to carry forward with respect. There's a real humility in that, and it's part of why we care so much about doing it right.
Every bite of bison connects back to a story far older than any of us.

Here's a little story Nick loves to tell. 🛻
Tangen Draw is a young ranch — a good deal of what's here, including some of our roads, was only put in within the last five years. You'd think that would be obvious to anyone passing through.
And yet, every so often, an old timer will find their way onto the place, look around, and tell us with complete certainty that they've been driving this very road for decades. We just smile and let them have it — because there's something kind of wonderful about it.
Maybe it's the country. Maybe it's the way good land settles into a place like it's always been there. Either way, it always gives us a laugh and a little reminder that even though the ranch is new, it already feels like it belongs to this landscape. 🌾

For the first time in a couple of weeks, we woke up to clear skies over Big Timber this week — and we didn't realize how much we'd missed them. 🌤
It's been a rough stretch across Montana. The Sand Creek Fire and others have pushed smoke into nearly every corner of the state, hazing out our mountains and settling into everything. When you live and work on the land the way we do, that smoke isn't just an inconvenience — it's a constant reminder of how quickly a fire season can turn serious.
So this week's clean air and open horizon felt like a genuine gift.
But we're holding that gratitude with both hands, because this isn't over. Our neighbors near Wisdom are still facing active fire, evacuations, and long days for the crews on the ground. Clear skies in Big Timber don't change what southwest Montana is still going through — and our thoughts, and our thanks, are with every firefighter and family in the middle of it.
Fire season is part of ranching in this country. It's stressful, it's humbling, and every year it reminds us how much we depend on good land, good preparation, and good neighbors.
To everyone still in the fight — stay safe. We're grateful for you.

There's a big difference between the cowboy you picture and the way we actually work with our animals at Tangen Draw. 🦬
In this one, Nick explains what "low-stress handling" really means out here. We'll be honest — it's not zero stress. These are still wild animals, and moving a herd is never nothing. But we've traded the old ways of whipping and hollering for something better: learning exactly how to position ourselves so the animals feel gentle pressure and move naturally, on their own terms.
The result is calmer animals, a safer team, and meat raised the way it should be — with respect from the first day to the last. It's a small change in approach that makes a world of difference for the herd.

Our Monday meeting didn't happen in a conference room. It happened in a field — reading bison manure. 🦬
No, really. This morning the team gathered out on the east side of the ranch, where Jacob walked everyone through the science of high-impact grazing — and it starts in some unexpected places.
Turns out you can read an animal's diet in its manure: protein levels, fiber, how well the forage is feeding the herd. A bison's rumen is constantly self-regulating, choosing different plants — sometimes within a few square feet — to get exactly the nutrients it needs. Nature's own nutritionist. 🌾
But the payoff goes way beyond the animals. Done right, high-impact grazing:
🌱 Reduces erosion and runoff along our creeks and riparian areas
🌱 Builds ground cover that actually cools the soil — a real advantage in the heat we've been having

Everyone thinks bison are just big, wild cattle. They couldn't be more wrong. 🦬
Chad, our ranch manager, breaks down what most people never learn: bison and cattle are nothing alike. Push a herd of cattle and they scatter. Push bison, and they pull together — tight-knit, moving as one, reading each other constantly.
Honestly? They behave more like a flock of sheep than a herd of cattle. Once you understand that, you manage them completely differently.
