Crazy Mountain Stockgrowers hosts second Ag Tour
The Crazy Mountain Stockgrowers Association hosted their second Sweet Grass County Ag Tour on June 12th. The tour started at Yellowstone Feeds and the Sweet Grass County Wool Marketing Association Wool warehouse. Participants listened to David Breck, President of the Sweet Grass Wool Marketing Association, talk about the history of wool in our county and the wool warehouse and they were able to see the stored wool and the historic wool warehouse.
The group then boarded the bus and traveled to All Creatures Vet where participants learned about the veterinary profession and the trends affecting agriculture in our county. Dr. Jason Hasbrook spook to the group about the challenges in a mixed animal practice, the influences of technology in veterinary medicine, and what a typical day looks like for a veterinarian as well as other issues.
From the clinic the group then traveled to 406 Hayshed to learn about the forage business from Brett and Julie Todd. Brett and Julie explained to the participants what their business does and showed them some of the equipment that they use.
Back on the bus the tour proceeded to DS Jr. Logging in Greycliff. Dave and Janice welcomed the group and discussed logging and timber management as a resource for ranchers and timber as an agricultural business. The group also heard from representatives from Sun Mountain Lumber and Montana Logging Association.
While at the Sheet’s the group was treated to a free tri-tip lunch prepared and served by Ryan and Amy Keyes, owners of Elevate Craft BBQ, and sponsored by the Crazy Mountain Stockgrowers Association. Several said that the lunch was well worth the wait. During lunch Tara Becken spoke to the group about the school to lunch program from the Crazy Peak Cattlewomen.
After lunch the group boarded the bus and returned to Big Timber for the last stop at Pioneer Meats. Brian Engle, owner of Pioneer Meats, discussed the packing industry and the value-added meat products that the business creates and markets. The group then returned to the wool warehouse at the conclusion of the tour.
In all there were twenty participants that learned more about the agriculture industry in our county and the small businesses that make this community such a wonderful place to live and run a business in. The next Crazy Mountain Stockgrowers tour will be in 2028.
The Crazy Mountain Stockgrowers TGIF golf tournament will be August 14th at the Overland Golf Course and all are welcome to attend.
