Thank you to those who came to support our first spring bull sale!

We didn’t quite know what we were getting into, but we were happy to see many new faces along with many familiar! We always enjoy spending this time to conversing my with those who find value in our program.

Our new apprentice this year is Wendell!

“I was first introduced to Roger and Betsy Indreland through the Working Cows Podcast.
At the time, I was in South Dakota looking for a start in agriculture, so I decided to make the drive to Big Timber for their fall bull sale and to meet the crew.
I left thoroughly impressed - and fortunately, they had an apprenticeship spot opening up for this season. I am now about four months into my time at Indreland Angus and have really enjoyed the experience.
During this apprenticeship, I'm focusing on improving my stockmanship and grazing management while learning what it takes to run a successful ranching operation. I’ll be at the bull sale this Friday and look forward to meeting everyone there!”

We are happy he made the trip for our fall bull sale and that he wanted to join our team, he’s been doing great things up at our high elevation lease pasture - if you see him Friday make sure to say hi!

Sale day is fast approaching!

Tomorrow the bulls will be getting their “lot tags”. We made this addition to our “sale prep” for the fall sale and we think it made it much easier to walk through the bull pens and pick out the bulls you were interested in.

Pictured is 4534, he will be lot 13. He is a son of our 12 year old herd bull 4666 and will make an exceptional cow bull bringing fertility and longevity to any herd!

Consider this …. Lessons to be learned if we are willing to pay attention!

What if the most profitable ranch model already exists ... and nobody built it?
We're not so much in the cattle business as we are in the energy business. Our job is to capture, harvest, and convert solar energy into harvestable products. Mother Nature figured that out a long time ago.

She doesn't need equipment to harvest forages. She uses four-legged combines. She doesn't carry high capital expenses or overhead. She selects animals that fit the environment. And she matches the reproductive cycle of her animals to the forage cycle.

The ranchers who stop fighting nature and start working with it tend to find something surprising on the other side: lower costs, less labor, and healthier land.
As Laurie Lasater put it: "I think Nature is smart as hell. I help as much as I can, but I try to let her do most of the work."

The American Angus Association’s definition of $EN (cow energy value) is expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires.

A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars save on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.”

According to the 2026 Spring Sire Evaluation Report, the average for $EN in the Angus breed for non-parent bulls is -17.

Indreland Angus average $EN for our registered sale bulls is +23. With the rising cost of feed, we think the $EN number should really be evaluated, and in our opinion is the first step to low input production. In this case the difference of $40 is a cost savings on EVERY animal in your herd, PER YEAR. 𝟵𝟳% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝟯% 𝗳𝗼𝗿 $𝗘𝗡 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘀.
